Brother Robert Brantley

Robert was assigned to Fire Station 10/C, Battalion 7, passed away after a long-term illness on Friday, January 5, 2018, at the age of 50. Brother Brantley was a lifelong firefighter who began his career in 1993 with the MCAS Miramar Fire Department. He began his career as a Los Angeles County Fire Fighter in 1999. FFS Brantley was a dedicated and respected member of the LA County Fire Department who faithfully served for 19 years.

Brother Brantley was also a proud member of the US Navy.

We thank him for his service both to the citizens of Los Angeles County and the US.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018,
beginning at 10:00 a.m. at:

With a great deal of sorrow I unfortunately announce the passing of our brother Robert Brantley. Brother Brantley has been assigned to Battalion 7 for some time, most recently at FS 10. He held the rank of Firefighter Specialist.

Brother Brantley is survived by his wife Kim and their adult son Robert Jr.

At this time there are no service details as the Department's Chaplains and Memorial Management Team (MMT) are working with the family to prepare to honor our Brother and his family appropriately. PEER Support has also been activated to assist.

I thank Chief Osby for his efforts to help our Brothers family in their time of need.

When service details become available both your union and the Department will provide that information.

Please keep Brother Brantley, his family and his fire family in your thoughts and prayers.

As we watched the end of 2017 go up in flames...we welcome 2018

As 2017 ended we welcomed Hermosa Beach to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and we welcome our newest members to 1014. Congratulations to Hermosa's Local President Aaron Marks and his (now ours) members. We began service on the 30th of December to the City of Hermosa. Station 100 is now staffed by LACFD and protecting the residents of Hermosa.

2017 ended with some of our members STILL at the Thomas fire, the largest in the history of California. With that massive fire we will never forget our brother Cory Iverson and his family.

As we let you know recently we were finally granted a negotiated benefit that the County fought giving the 56 hour firefighters in bargaining units (BU) 601 & 602. The 12 hours of Holiday time will show up on your 1.15.18 paycheck and be credited toward you 12.31.17 benefit hours.

The first stop in 2018 for your Executive Board is negotiations to a successor MOU for BU 601 & 602. As we have said before we will keep you updated at local1014.org once we begin negotiations.

Be safe tonight. Make good decisions.  PLEASE do not hesitate to get a ride.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays

Local 1014 members close out the year with an extraordinary month of fighting fires throughout Southern California including the Thomas fire - the largest fire in California's history. May we give pause to remember all of the fallen and we shall never forget CAL FIRE's Cory Iverson who made the ultimate sacrifice on the Thomas Fire.

We have also been fighting fires in other areas as well. As we have seen there have been some changes nationally and one of those was the push to stop funding the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs. These funds were set to expire January 2, 2018. Like many departments nationally our department has taken advantage of these grants in El Monte and Inglewood just to name a few places.

We worked hard on our friends and those that have not always been our friends to get these programs funded. We worked side by side with the IAFF and other locals to keep the funding alive.

After a many hours of hard work we have finally been able to convince the County that they do in fact owe us the Holiday hours for all 56 hour firefighters. As you may know during our County Coalition of Unions (CCU) negotiations in 2015 we were able to secure another holiday.  Cesar Chavez day. Every County employee except 56 hour firefighters were granted that holiday in 2017.

This happened literally in the 11th hour and it will show on your January 15th pay warrant. It will be credited as of December 31, 2017. What this means is if you are retiring in 2018 you can take full advantage of the 1/2 shift for your highest year calculation.

We are still working on the vacation time. As of now you will see any excess hours on your January 30th pay warren like you may have on your January 30, 2017 pay warren. We are still going through the administrative process established by County code and will be heading to arbitration later in 2018. We will keep you updated.

Remember for those in Bargaining Units (BU) 601 & 602 our contract ends at midnight December 31st. Our last salary increase is 2% and that will happen January 1st, 2018 and show on your January 30th pay warrant. We have yet to sit at the bargaining table for official negotiations as that will happen in January and we will keep moving forward until we get a fair contract. As we have done in the past we will have a contract negotiations update link on our website (local1014.org). You will need to be registered to view this as it will be under the member resources heading.

Our strike teams are home from the Thomas fire while a few 1014 members are still hard at work in overhead positions. A grueling few weeks, and for some a few more weeks to go. Our job was not done though, we had one more critical task to complete today. Today we laid to rest our brother from CAL FIRE  Cory Iverson. We honored his family, his department and our profession today and always. He made the ultimate sacrifice on the Thomas fire and we shall never forget.

We know we have much to be thankful for heading into this Thanksgiving Weekend.  We work for one of the greatest fire service agencies in the World and that's because of the men and women who make it happen each and every day.  We are thankful for the spirit and passion and dedication that our membership brings to the firehouse and the citizens we serve in Los Angeles County and throughout the World with the vast Structural, Air and Wildland, Forestry, Health Haz-Mat, Dispatch, Heavy Equipment and Emergency Medical Services we offer.   We are like no other agency in the world in all we do and all we are.  COUNTY!  Local 1014! 

Local 1014 has been working hard on your behalf and on behalf of our families as late as the day before Thanksgiving to remain at the forefront of Union strength to advance and protect the members who serve with the Los Angeles County Fire Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1014.  There is so much that goes into our collective team that is over 3200 strong.  Remember as we give thanks, that we also work hard to keep our way of life and our profession at the top of the game.  Local 1014 members work hard and play hard and are Thankful for all we have in opportunity to serve and time with our friends and families. 

Thanksgiving is a day we now know as a Recognized Holiday to not only give thanks, but also to kick off the Holiday Season and spend time with our families and friends and eat too much and celebrate all that is good. Thanksgiving has its origins in an annual Good Harvest Thanks and was a hard fought for recognized holiday in our history. The original meal of 1621 at Plymouth Rock was not formally set into America's History until hundreds of years later. After much debate and political influence by Presidents Washington and Lincoln and 40 years of letters from author Sarah Josepha Hale to politicians, and with the help of stores and commerce interests who wanted to kick off spending for the season entering into Christmas, Franklin D. Roosevelt, on December 26, 1941, signed a joint resolution of Congress to set the Thanksgiving Holiday to be the fourth Thursday in November. This is now a vital part of our economy as well as a day to give thanks for hard work and the fruitful harvest of our efforts. This strangely sounds a lot like a Union Operation!

Enjoy the Thanksgiving Feast and give thanks and prayer for all we are fortunate to have and remember the hard work it took to get it done, and as always we ask that you do so responsibly.   Choose not to drink this holiday or limit your drinks, but if you are going to drink alcohol, remember GET A DRIVER, GET A CAB or GET A ROOM, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!

Please take a moment and remember the families of our fallen, and the those who are less fortunate then us. Remember those in our country and throught the wold who have suffered tragedy be it natural or man made. This has been a difficult year for many. They need our thoughts and prayers and our voices to surround them with our arms and know that they are part of our family  always.

Today we honor those among us that have served in our military. Those that every day served in our Armed Forces to make sure we are safe. Those that spent every minute of every day making sure that the citizens of our United States can continue to have the freedoms we have. Those freedoms are the envy of most other nations. We cannot thank our Veterans enough for what they have, and continue, to do for us.

Some of our 1014 members are Veterans. PLEASE take today to thank a Veteran. Call your friends, neighbors, family members or your brother or sister firefighters and thank them for the sacrifices they have made so that we can enjoy our freedoms.

Veterans Day is observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans; that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service.[1] It is also not to be confused with Armed Forces Day, a minor U.S. remembrance that also occurs in May, which specifically honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.

In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of National Veterans Day. Weeks led the first national celebration in 1947 in Alabama and annually until his death in 1985. President Reagan honored Weeks at the White House with the Presidential Citizenship Medal in 1982 as the driving force for the national holiday. Elizabeth Dole, who prepared the briefing for President Reagan, determined Weeks as the "Father of Veterans Day."[4]

U.S. Representative Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas, presented a bill establishing the holiday through Congress. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954. It had been eight and a half years since Weeks held his first Armistice Day celebration for all veterans.[5]

Congress amended the bill on June 1, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans," and it has been known as Veterans Day since.[6][7]

Another succesful election night.  With our partners we had solid wins in the two races we were involved in (see below).  The numbers were higher than projected because 1014 was involved.

We called for help and you, our members, showed up in force. We walked for 8 days and had over 140 members answer the call for help. You continue to amaze us.

A BIG THANK YOU from your 1014 Executive Board to our members, our voters and our partners on two wins that will solidify funds for fire, police and other services.  These two cities, Hawthorne and El Monte are fee for service cities and we have helped to secure the funding for our services for years to come.

Measure HH proposes to raise the total sales tax rate in Hawthorne from 9.5 percent to 10.25 percent. The state-mandated tax rate that applies throughout California is 7.25 percent, with revenue allocated to various purposes. As of 2017, Los Angeles County also levied a 2.25 percent sales tax.[1] The average total sales tax rate throughout the county was 9.5 percent.[2]

City officials estimated that the sales tax rate increase would generate $8.5 million yearly.[3]

We visited or called 4,190 Hawthorne voters - well over our projection of 3,500 we anticipated before GOTV weekend.  Before entering the weekend, we had completed 3 full passes on the phones and at the doors of our target precincts.  Over the weekend we completed another complete pass.  We also did another sweep over the phones that was completed last night and also called through all of our identified supporters to reconfirm their support and remind them of where their polling place is.

Lean Support:  520  12.4%
Undecided:  559  13.3%
