Election Day November 2017
Updated On: Nov 08, 2017

Los Angeles County Firefighters IAFF Local 1014

Representing over 3200 Firefighters, Paramedics, Dispatchers,
Pilots, Wildland Firefighters, Forestry and Health Haz Mat personnel

Election Day November 2017

Another succesful election night.  With our partners we had solid wins in the two races we were involved in (see below).  The numbers were higher than projected because 1014 was involved.

We called for help and you, our members, showed up in force. We walked for 8 days and had over 140 members answer the call for help. You continue to amaze us.

A BIG THANK YOU from your 1014 Executive Board to our members, our voters and our partners on two wins that will solidify funds for fire, police and other services.  These two cities, Hawthorne and El Monte are fee for service cities and we have helped to secure the funding for our services for years to come.

Final results from the 2 elections we were actively involved in this cycle:

Hawthorne Measure HH

From ballotpedia.org

yes vote is a vote in favor of imposing an additional sales tax of 0.75 percent to fund general city services.

no vote is a vote against imposing an additional sales tax of 0.75 percent to fund general city services.

Measure HH proposes to raise the total sales tax rate in Hawthorne from 9.5 percent to 10.25 percent. The state-mandated tax rate that applies throughout California is 7.25 percent, with revenue allocated to various purposes. As of 2017, Los Angeles County also levied a 2.25 percent sales tax.[1] The average total sales tax rate throughout the county was 9.5 percent.[2]

City officials estimated that the sales tax rate increase would generate $8.5 million yearly.[3]

From our campaign staff before the polls closed

We visited or called 4,190 Hawthorne voters - well over our projection of 3,500 we anticipated before GOTV weekend.  Before entering the weekend, we had completed 3 full passes on the phones and at the doors of our target precincts.  Over the weekend we completed another complete pass.  We also did another sweep over the phones that was completed last night and also called through all of our identified supporters to reconfirm their support and remind them of where their polling place is.

Our support reconfirm rate is a strong 95.7%.

Here are the final numbers:
Strong Support:  2,931  69.9%
Lean Support:  520  12.4%
Undecided:  559  13.3%
Lean Oppose:  44  1.0%
Strong Oppose:  136  3.2%
Total IDs:  4,190

El Monte Measure EM

From ballotpedia.org

yes vote is a vote in favor of renewing for ten years the local sales tax of 0.5 percent (half-cent) to fund general city services.

no vote is a vote against renewing for ten years the local sales tax of 0.5 percent (half-cent) to fund general city services, thereby allowing the tax to expire in March 2019.

Measure EM was designed to renew the local 0.5 percent sales tax in El Monte, maintaining a total sales tax rate of 10 percent. The state-mandated tax rate that applies throughout California is 7.25 percent, with revenue allocated to various purposes. As of October 1, 2017, Los Angeles County also levied a sales tax of 2.25 percent.[1][2] The average total sales tax rate throughout the county was 9.5 percent.[3]
