Wind Whipped Fire Scorches LA County, Gov. Declares Drought

A fast-moving fire near Glendora in Southern California has scorched over 1,700 acres and forced thousands to evacuate. The Colby Fire erupted early Thursday morning in the Angeles National Forest, and was fanned over drought-parched hills by winds gusting to 30 mph, threatening the outskirts of Glendora, located northeast of LA. As of Thursday evening, the blaze was 30% contained. CLICK FOR GALLERY OF PHOTOS FROM LOS ANGELES TIMES  No injuries have been reported in the fire. More than 3,600 people were forced to evacuate their homes, about half of which have been allowed to return. Three campers have been arrested and charged with recklessly starting the fire. More than 1,000 firefighting personnel have been deployed so far, and more are expected. Red Flag warnings are expected to continue through Friday and winds are expected to continue gusting to 30 mph.The appearance of Santa Ana winds in January is part of the unusual weather pattern that has produced nearly unimaginable fire risk for January. A year-long high-pressure ridge has kept the rains north of the state. The lack of rainfall throughout California has produced a Sierra snow-pack that is 17% of normal. On Friday, Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a drought emergency in California in response to the widening risk.

30 SECONDS OR LESS…

WHAT’S UP WITH 48/96?  Executive Board dealing with getting a vote taken and ensuring it has standing and relevance whether you are a no or a yes…one thing to prepare for whether you support a one year trial or do not support a one year trial is to prepare to VOTE!

PENSION ASSAULT? State Initiatives continue to live and breathe and we are continuing to work with all of Labor in the State to battle these hot spots…more to come as they unfold, but be ready to fight.  The San Jose Mayor Initiative is not the only attack we will see.

LEGISLATION AND POLITICAL ACTION EFFORTS?  Local 1014, along in alliances with UFLAC Local 112 (LA City Firefighters), and Long Beach Firefighters Local 372 have been driving the LA Political Action Efforts to ensure leaders who understand the Firefighter issues and members will be elected to the State Legislature.  Also we are thick in the mix of the current legislative session to pass bills that work to protect our members including the Death Benefits Workers Compensation Bill to protect our widows and orphans should our members die greater than 240 weeks (4.6) years after an active duty cancer claim is filed.  Preparing for 2014 Board of Supervisors elections and City Elections and the Lift will be heavy and significant and we are allied with the Labor Partners that helped elect Mark Ridley Thomas…here we go!

What’s going on with Inglewood, El Monte, Pomona, La Habra, and other cities coming in to the District?  Inglewood – working to get the financial gaps between the SAFER ACT Grant amounts and 3rd year and beyond worked out to reopen 172’s….any other Truck Alley Issues or realignment issues will be discussed later – no line chiefs no anything about what they speak other than rumors or greatest versions of “a plan” disregard them and wait for the real story… El Monte – we are working to get the financial gaps between SAFER ACT Grant Funding, regular budget and actual budget worked out…like Inglewood, we have good votes and support (Local 1014 Elected Leaders), we just need good math and a plan.  We are helping the Department get the math right along with the plan and helping the city get it right also…  Pomona – hold your breathe!  No change as of yet in support or money to get things fixed and reopen a company….rumors just rumors…one thing for sure, money is going to drive sense at some point along with political action…the Pomona Police Officers Association will continue to bit off their nose to spite their face…. We have a funding plan that will forever get us out of the contracting arrangement with the City, but we need the math and the votes…not an easy chore and politics are a mess…stay tuned and we will continue to work to a resolution….helping force the city to go with Los Angeles Sheriff is not off the table…  La Habra – FULLERTON….  Fullerton Fire Chief gets big bold britches and tries to force a La Habra / Brea / Fullerton merger….he’s getting a little taste of Local 1014 Power and reach and a little more is scheduled and likely he will find his silence quickly…we’ll keep you posted.  Vernon, Downey, Avalon, West Covina, Monterey Park, and any other City that wishes or wants or is “close” to “Going County”….simply does not have the votes, the plan, the wherewithal to finish….so while all remain possibilities none are probabilities at this time….

STAFFING AND OPERATION AND POLICIES…  We are repairing and working on the Damages that the Ops Bureau Deputy has and continues to cause as well as the issues hailing from the Human Relations Chief (Civilian) highlighted by but not limited to Staffing Fiascos with Late Notice, Bids and Transfers Interference with MOU Violations, Promotions, Discipline, Fit for Duty Issues, and more.  We are working with the Fire Chief and good members of the Executive Staff to correct and in fact improve how we do business.  The last three weeks have served to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back with regard to their work product.  We are using discussions with the Chief, Unfair Labor Charges, and BOS and CEO collective to solve the problems…we will remain reserved on the issues in publication unless and until we must go to press to push the issues.  I am confident we will not have to go there, however we are not new to this and this is certainly not our first rodeo.

OK…We know there is more but that’s a quick look at some of the latest things in our world….  Sign up to receive Local 1014 web blasts at www.local1014.org and California Professional Firefighters Blasts at www.cpf.org and IAFF Blasts at www.local1014.org   These are the sites that speak to your profession and issues affecting your paycheck, working conditions, benefits and more.  Stay informed.  We will also be setting up REGIONAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS AGAIN IN 2014 STARTING WITH FEBRUARY MEETING…. WE’RE COMING TO YOU!

FRATERNALLY,

LOCAL 1014 EXECUTIVE BOARD
