Friday Update 7-15-22
Updated On: Aug 12, 2022

Sisters and Brothers,

This week, we had devastating news from Kern County with two LODDs within days of each other. Our prayers and condolences to our brothers and sisters at Kern County Firefighters, IAFF Local 1301, as they grieve the loss of brother, Captain Brian Falk, a 20+-year veteran of the Kern County Fire Department who died yesterday. Earlier this week, Kern Co. suffered another LODD loss of seasonal firefighter Aiden Agnor who died from injuries sustained in an on-duty accident. Brother Agnor was just 18 years old and pursuing his dream of becoming a firefighter.

Our hearts are heavy, and we will support our Kern County brothers and sisters with any help they need in the coming weeks.

SAVE THE DATE: SOLIDARITY RALLY FOR A FAIR CONTRACT AT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

This week, we again saw little to no movement at the bargaining table for our successor MOU for our Firefighters series. We will not allow the Department to put their poor management on the back of our members. The time has come for us to make our voices heard at the highest level!

This week the Department managers at the table again failed to get at the budget analysis and methodology to move this table to a fair contract.  It is clear the Department leadership is in a state of disarray in transition, and the CEO and BOS need to hear the frustrations of our table and our disappointment and dismay at the lack of preparation understanding of the department numbers.  We have moved this issue front and center to Acting Fire Chief Marrone and his staff as we look for a path to finish.   We conveyed to Chief Marrone the importance of settling this contract on behalf of his 3400 firefighters and their families.

SAVE THE DATE: On July 26th, we will rally at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. We are asking that all off-duty members show up and demonstrate our solidarity to the Board. We need to show them that we are united! Make your voice heard! Bring your families, we will be providing signs and Local 1014 t-shirts. Let's the Board of Supervisors who protects their communities and why we need and deserve a fair contract.

Watch your emails next week for more details as we take the fight for a fair contract for our members to the Board of Supervisors! Solidarity! Local 1014 Strong!
CA Firefighter Memorial

On July 30th, we will join over 30,000 of our fellow Firefighters from across California to honor our fallen at the CA Firefighter Memorial. LA County will be adding eight (8) of our fallen heroes California Firefighters Memorial Wall in Sacramento’s Historic Capitol Park. The following names will be added:

• Fire Fighter Brian K. Ballentine
• Fire Fighter Specialist Tory Carlon
• Fire Captain Carlos Estrella
• Fire Fighter Jonathan Flagler
• Fire Captain William L. Knott
• Fire Fighter Specialist Samuel C. Neubauer
• Fire Captain Manuel Ramos
• Battalion Chief Mark A. Tolbert

Our fallen brothers' sacrifice will be honored on the Memorial Wall with the names of more than 1,400 California firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1850.

We will be sharing the livestream of the event on our social media channels. Stay tuned for the link as we get closer.
Celebrating Our History (1923-2023)

Next year, our Department will commemorate its 100th anniversary!  We are asking our members to be sure to take your centennial photo! We also want to remind you that a limited number of centennial yearbooks remain available for pre-sale purchase through the LACoFD Fire Foundation.

The LACoFD’s centennial yearbook is being published in partnership with the LACoFD Fire Foundation. The library-quality, hardbound yearbook will highlight our world-renowned legacy as trailblazers in the fire service and pay tribute to the many generations of team members who have proudly served with honor and bravery.
