Friday Update 2-9-24
Posted On: Mar 06, 2024

Brothers & Sisters,

As we set to kick off what will surely be a busy Super Bowl weekend, we want to begin by thanking those of you who are working in stations this weekend. We also want to remind our members at home to please celebrate responsibly.

Dont drink and drive! Lyft, Uber, cab or designated drivers, and public transportation will protect you and your family and protect your job. Get a place to stay and or make arrangements to let time be your friend when drinking alcohol.

OVERTIME CAP LIFTED FROM 90 TO 120

Your Staffing Committee members from Local 1014 have been pushing the elimination of the annual overtime cap, as we believe the cap is arbitrary and limits workers who want to work from working.  That being said, we must legally bargain over the item just like the department has to bargain over wages, hours, and working conditions, including all the Manual of Operations policies.

The staffing committee met numerous times with the department to strike and agree to move the OT CAP from 90 to 120 shifts.  The department references industrial injuries as a cause for overtime issues and behavioral health issues. While we are collectively working to improve the workers' compensation system and get folks back to work, the fact is that emergency overtime and recalls to duty, swift water staffing, and more account for a big percentage of the SRC also.

Take a look at ET-70 for the changes, and the reality is the ONLY reason for a CAP is a holdover to the annual earnings perception in thought from many many years ago.  We also believe that perhaps the MAPP bonus dollars perhaps should also have a CAP if perception is the rule.

One might argue that MAPP goals are already in the job description for positions at the Executive Staff level.  We will keep you posted while we continue to work on this and negotiate a permanent removal of the annual CAP.  Click here to view EA-71.

CLOSURE OF WESTCHESTER MEDICAL GROUP

Once again, the Department has failed to ensure the health and safety of our members. The closure of Westchester is unacceptable. Six months ago, Local 1014 warned management of the potential closure, and well, here we are. No action was taken.

Now, the Department is asking you to use your insurance for a medical visit that the Fire Department is contractually responsible for providing. We encourage members to utilize your PRIVATE insurance for your needs and those of your family. Get checked routinely for your own personal health but we do not feel that you should use your insurance and your money to pay for an exam that should be provided to you. Read the EA here.

If you cannot get an appointment for your annual physical, rest assured that all your bonuses will remain intact. Management's failure to live up to our MOU is not your problem.
Final Staffing Survey

Please be ready for the launch of the final staffing survey coming soon! It will address the trial period we have been under with EA-68. All members' participation is encouraged.

If you have members in your station who have not signed up for the union website please have them do so. We want as many participants from all ranks to participate.
LA County Fire Safety Measure
Visit www.lacountyfiresafety.com to learn more.

Local 1014 continues aggressively moving forward on the signature gathering for our ballot initiative to secure more funding for our Department, including staffing, infrastructure, apparatus, and equipment. We are currently gathering signatures in locations throughout the district.   We have over 55,000 signatures this week which shows the amount of public support we have for this issue

REMINDER: If you get questions while in the field working or calls at the station, you can confirm there is a citizen's initiative for additional funding for the LA County Fire District. You can also direct them to the website above or any Local 1014 Executive Board member.

If someone approached you in the station asking for firefighters to gather signatures or sign petitions, do not accept. Get their name and ask them to leave the station.

We have a lot of work to do to secure those votes, but together, we can win for the future of our Department and our families. Thank you all in advance for your consideration of our collective efforts.

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
