Friday Update 8-4-23
Updated On: Aug 28, 2023

Brothers and Sisters,

This week, following a vote of our Executive Board, Local 1014 began moving forward on the signature gathering for our ballot initiative, Measure F, to secure more funding for our Department including staffing, infrastructure, apparatus and equipment.

This is only the first step but it is an important one as we work to secure permanent solutions that will ensure our members continue to have the resources they need as our County population and our call volumes and intensity increase. We have not had an readjustment to the formula for our revenue streams in over 25 years.

Look for more updates on this as we move towards the ballot and a better future for our Department.

STATE POLITICAL ACTION UPDATE

Political action is our most powerful tool in advocating for our members and their families. Your Local 1014 Executive Board takes the endorsement process at every level of government very seriously and we critically evaluate each candidate.

In addition to our local county and city races, we also play heavily in state races for State Senate and State Assembly races through the California Professional Firefighters our state union.

The past several weeks, we have also been engaging in our cluster interviews for all races that affect our jurisdiction. This week we have interviewed over 50 candidates in our state races. We are working hard together with our neighboring local affiliates, including Pasadena, Burbank, Glendale, LA City and others, to choose candidates that are strong on state fire issues like state funding for fire and EMS services, wall time issues, pensions, and workers' compensation reform all of which are greatly affected by our state legislature. This is a long process, but we will have more in those endorsements as we move closer.

Special thanks to our CPF political and legislative staff who have worked tirelessly to endure we are well-prepared for these interviews and that all candidates are interviewed.

SECOND TRIAL STAFFING SURVEY EMAILED

As of today, we have had over 1,200 members engage in the survey!

There is nothing more important than the input of our members. The staffing committee, comprised of labor and management, will review the input and evaluate what is working and what is not to make adjustments.

Captains, encourage your members to take the survey in your morning lineup. Please check your spam and junk folders diligently, and be sure to complete the survey. If anyone in your stations has yet to sign up for the Friday Updates on the website, encourage them to do so and take the survey.

Feel free to call any Local 1014 Director or the staffing committee members if you have any questions about the survey.  Thank you to all our members during this trial period for your patience and your input to improve our system so it works for everyone.

If you have checked your spam folder and still have not received the email, please email ssaporito@local1014.org.

LACOFD CENTENNIAL YEARBOOK

As we celebrate the Department’s historic 100th anniversary in 2023, the Yearbook Committee has extended the deadline for Department and retired personnel to purchase a Centennial Yearbook.  A preview of the Centennial Yearbook cover can be found in the attachment. Centennial Yearbooks are available to all personnel to purchase at their own expense on the LA County Fire Foundation Store webpage.

This is a profound benchmark in our history, as we celebrate our legacy in the fire service as we pay tribute to the many generations of team members who have proudly served with honor and bravery and paved the way for the next 100 years in the Department’s history.

REMINDER: We are calling on local artists and those in our fire family to submit proposals for a permanent art installation to be installed at Station 81. This art installation is meant to not only provide a remembrance site for our Brother Tory Carlon, but also provide a place of healing for those most impacted by this incident and a reminder of the importance of our Fire Family and behavioral health in the fire service.

The art project will be installed at LACoFD Station 81 in Agua Dulce. The project must provide 1) a memorial and remembrance for Brother Tory Carlon, 2) emphasize the importance of our Fire Family and 3) provide a reflective space that emphasizes the importance of behavioral health in the fire service.

While we will be accepting submissions from the local community, we will give preference to members of our Fire Family who submit projects.

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
