Friday Update 4-8-22
Updated On: May 05, 2022

Brothers & Sisters,

It is with a heavy heart that we begin our update with the announcement of the active-duty passing of Fire Dispatcher II Sergio Escobedo. Brother Sergio passed away unexpectedly yesterday at the age of 43.

Sergio was a United States Air Force veteran, and a 15-year veteran dispatcher at LACoFD and had been recognized as the LACoFD’s Dispatcher of the Year. Known for his sense of humor and love of the Dodgers, he will be deeply missed by his friends and family.

PEER SUPPORT QUARTERLY MEETING

Yesterday, the LACOFD Peer Support Team held its first in-person quarterly meeting since the pandemic. Over the past two years our team has grown to the largest Peer Support Team in the nation with over 200 peers and as of yesterday four peer support canine members.

At the training peers engaged in breakout sessions and listened to presentations on a range of topics including resiliency, workplace violence, and suicide prevention. Also at the training, our two new peer support dogs were given their badges to begin work right away.

We now have dogs placed regionally throughout the County to better serve our members. Milo is with Scott Ross as the peer coordinator, Echo is with FFPM Jake Windell in the north region, FS 107, Tiller is with Capt. Ben Sheen in the central region, FS 14, and Ava is with Capt Don McLaughlin in the north region, FS 33. Thank you to Brother Jake Windell for his leadership with the program and our amazing dogs!

Thank you to our Peer Support Coordinator Scott Ross, all our Peer Leads, and Dr. Steve Froehlich, for their continued support of our members.

Local 1014 Blood Drive

The blood supply is at an all-time low for the American Red Cross. They are experiencing a severe shortage of O Negative blood with only a one-day supply at times. They have reached out to our Union for help. We consistently show up for the Red Cross so they are once again asking our members and families to step up.

As part of our commitment to our communities, Local 1014 will be hosting a blood drive Tuesday, May 3rd from 9am-3pm at our Union Hall. It only takes 30 mins to save 3 lives. Sign up today and be a hero!
