LACERA

Safety Member Election

Get Out The Vote!

LACERA Ballots are in the mail, we need our safety members to Get Out The Vote!

Every 3 years we are asked to elect a Safety Member on the LACERA Board of Retirement AND the LACERA Board of Investments. For the last 14 years we have been successful in electing William "Will" Pryor to the boards despite having far less members than other safety groups. Having a fire representative on the board is very important to maintaining our future benefits.

Once again we need to GET OUT THE VOTE!

Active members have managed to remain untouched in the current battles over pensions. This is as a result of maintaining a well run retirement system that steadily earns money and pays its benefits. This is in no small part due to Will Pryor election to the boards of Investments and Retirement and his work at LACERA.

All Safety Members:

You will be getting your ballots (see sample below) from the LA County Registrar Recorder in the next few days. Please fill out your ballot, vote for William Pryor on BOTH BOARDS and return it (no stamp needed!) in the US Mail.  It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you VOTE for WILL for both positions on this ballot.  Any questions please let us know.

Station Captains/Site Supervisors:

For the next 3 "line ups" please go around the table and ask your station brothers a sisters if they have voted. If somebody has not received a ballot by July 1, Local 1014 will be sending out information on getting a duplicate ballot.

Again PLEASE join us in voting for Will Pryor for both the LACERA Board of Retirement and the Board of Investments.  We cannot afford to have someone else looking after our retirement security.  We need to make sure our collective voice is hear and that Will Pryor continues to serve on BOTH boards.  Again you have to vote for Will for BOTH boards.

Please GET OUT THE VOTE!

Your retirement future is at stake.

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

Monday is a day to remember those that have served us and sacrificed so much to make sure we are able to enjoy days like today.  Monday is the day to honor OUR heroes who are not just at work today, but every day, away from their families, some in a foreign place putting their life on the line to protect us.  Think about them and if you get the chance to thank one or more of them for keeping you safe, please do.

We live in the greatest country in the world, and for Los Angeles County Fire Fighters, Local 1014 Members, we are even more fortunate than most.  We are so not only through our hard work as a professional firefighter union, and because of what we do, but also as a result of those who sacrificed to provide an America where we have rights to bargain, negotiate and ultimately legislate that which we earn.

We also know we enjoy freedoms for ourselves and our families unlike those in any other country in the world and we are grateful for the hard work of the people who have served and we remember their sacrifices both past and present.

While we take time to remember in traditional manners such as services and ceremonies, mini vacations to the river and the beaches and barbeques in our own backyards…please “Remember Responsibly”.

If you will be consuming beverages with alcohol, use moderation and don’t drink and drive cars or boats this holiday.  GET A RIDE, GET A DRIVER or GET A ROOM!

There will be extra CHP vehicle checkpoints on all routes to the beaches and the river this weekend to keep us all safer so don’t test the waters; you could put your job and your families security in jeopardy…fact.  Not to mention it is the right thing to do and we should be setting the example for others and not put lives in harms way.

This weekend your 1014 board, if not at work, is spending time with our families too.  We want to wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day.  Stay safe and remember as we say every holiday PLEASE don’t drink and drive.

Oklahoma Tornado Disaster Relief

How can we help?

To make a $10 donation, text DISASTER to 50555*

Yesterday we watched on the news the loss of life and property, those precious things we are sworn to protect, destroyed in Oklahoma. The sad news is at least 24 people, including nine children, were killed, according to the Oklahoma state medical examiner's office. The scene of such devistation block after block of flattened homes and businesses, the gutted remains of a hospital and hits on two elementary schools -- left even seasoned veterans of Oklahoma's infamous tornadoes reeling. The devastation was so complete, the mayor of Moore, Oklahoma said city officials were racing to print new street signs to help guide rescuers and residents through a suddenly twisted and unfamiliar landscape.

As members of 1014 we see disaster often here in California. We are called to assist when these disasters hit both here at home and anywhere in the world. Our technical expertise has not been called upon to assist in Moore, Oklahoma but we can help.

Read below from the IAFF and consider helping if you can.

More than 500 IAFF members are located in the path of the massive tornados that devastated Moore, Oklahoma and a number of other Oklahoma cities, as well as several communities in Kansas.

The IAFF remains in communication with IAFF District Vice Presidents and state and affiliate leaders whose members are affected by these storms. Together, we have begun damage assessments, and the need for relief to IAFF members affected by the storm is substantial.

“The IAFF already has resources on the ground to assist members in immediate need,” says IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. “The most important thing our members can do right now.......(CLICK HERE TO READ MORE)

Calling All Local 1014 Members

Urgent members need to fill EMS Commission meeting to oppose one plus one staffing policy, once again.

Your Local 1014 Executive Board is once again calling on all our members to show support and solidarity for our brothers at Long Beach Firefighters, Local 372 in their effort to halt a proposed pilot program by their Fire Chief, City Manager, and L.A. County DHS that would call for “one and one” staffing.  This policy, Policy 407, is a proposed pilot study, seeking to reduce Long Beach Fire Department’s ALS unit staffing from its current staffing of two ALS personnel to one ALS Paramedic and one BLS EMT, and allow two paramedics from separate responding apparatus to make up the “Two Paramedic” model.

We know firsthand that this will not work and will delay Team Paramedic Care and ALS procedures that could cost lives and put our own members at risk and liability.  An injury to one is an injury to all and this directly affects the Long Beach Firefighters and Paramedics, but also affects LA County and LA City Firefighters and Paramedics in our auto and mutual aid agreements and could be the start of a trend we need to stop now.

Not only does this pilot program put the public at immediate risk, it should be a warning to all local and state fire agencies that this issue could be coming to your city, county or state agency in the very near future.

Please join your Local 1014 Executive Board and other Fire Union Members and Nurses in supporting Long Beach Firefighters, Local 372 in their effort to stop this pilot program, and show Los Angeles County Department of Health Services that when you jeopardize public safety, firefighters will rise up in force and solidarity and put a stop to it.

Please join us at:

DATE: Wednesday May 15th
TIME: 1:00 PM

“As the Department and the County of Los Angeles supports and assists Los Angeles County Fire Fighters each year with our annual MDA Fill the Boot Drive to raise funds to combat ALS Disease, a more than 60 year tradition of excellence with the I.A.F.F., so too do we support the annual March of Dimes Campaign.”

This year the Board of Supervisors, our Direct Fire Board Members, have proclaimed Saturday April 27th 2013 as Don’t Stop Believin Walk for Healthy babies Day throughout LA County. Please take time to come out and walk with TEAM : LA COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT or consider donating at http://www.marchforbabies.org/team/t2052348 and help with this very worthy cause and do something good for others.

This will be a great warm up for our members to get ready to Fill the Boot for MDA, a drive that is around the corner.

We appreciate the partnership with the Department and the County of Los Angeles for these types of events and public service missions and ask or members to rise up and help where you can…it all shows to the citizens we serve, and they support us.

Thanks in advance and hope to see you there on Saturday,

Your Executive Board of Local 1014
