Brother Scott LaRue, Fire Station 71, B Platoon BN 5, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at the age of 53. Fire Fighter Paramedic LaRue was a lifelong public servant who served for 13 years as a fire fighter with the Alhambra Fire Department.
Brother LaRue began his career as a Los Angeles County Fire Fighter in 2000.
Scott was a dedicated and respected member of our Department who faithfully served for 16 years.
A flag ceremony will be held Monday, October 10, 2016, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at:

Firefighter Paramedic Scott Larue
Fire Station 71, B platoon
It is with a great deal of sorrow that I inform you that Firefighter Paramedic Scott Larue, Fire Station 71, B platoon, Battalion 5 passed away unexpectedly on the night September 22nd from an off duty accident.
The Board of Supervisors, together with Fire Chief Daryl Osby and I pass along our deepest condolences and sympathies to Brother Larue's Family.
To ensure the proper care and support of the family and fire family of Brother Larue during this extremely difficult time, the Department has activated the Department's Memorial Management Team (MMT) and the PEER support team.
Please keep Brother Larue, his wife and children in your thoughts and prayers as they work through these difficult times.
There are no details yet on Brother Larue's services but as they become available we will keep you informed.

Local 1014 will join Union Leaders from throughout the United States and Canada as we come together in the shadow of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs at the IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial to honor own.
Local 1014, along with our families, honor guard and the pipes and drums will place into honor 4 more Los Angeles County Firefighters who will be added along with 123 fallen firefighters from throughout the United States.
We invite you to join us at the 30th IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony via live web broadcast beginning at 11am Mountain Time on Saturday 9/17/16.

James F. Horton

Jim was a firefighter from 1962 to 1992. He became interested in the fire service when he was in high school in the 1950's. He was always interested in helping others anyway he could.
Jim graduated from college in 1955 with a degree in petroleum technology. He married his high school sweetheart, Dixie, and raised two sons, Guy, who is a Captain with LACFD and Todd who owns a business.
Jim was a firefighter with the Whittier Fire Department for 13 years before moving on to LACFD which he loved. He served for 17 years. Jim loved the outdoors including fishing and hunting, and his friends on the fire department with whom he remained close. Jim worked three different stations and retired out of Station 110 on November 5, 1992. He passed away August 22, 1997.

Hector M. Magallanes

Hector was an amazing husband, father, family man and a great friend to many. He was very passionate about life and his second home with the LACFD. Hector joined the LACFD in 1986. He was promoted to FFS in 1998. He was seven months short of a 30-year career that he was so very proud of, as were we. Hector was involved in the mentorship program for troubled teens. He shared his knowledge, wisdom, aspirations and motivation with these young men letting them know that hard work and dedication to his family and education would lead them to a better happy life. His dedication to his family at home and on the job exemplified the type of man he was. He will forever be a member of a brotherhood that looks out for their own. His family feels very blessed having had this wonderful man in their lives and leaving them with a life-long relationship with the LACFD.

Joseph P. Saves

Joseph Savas, commonly known as "Jojo", joined the LACFD on March 26, 1998. He served as a Air Force Firefighter for five years prior to joining the department. Joseph was an incredible husband, father and son. He was hardworking, loving, attentive, and determined, always applying these traits to everything he did in life. He had an awesome sense of humor and always had the ability to make others around him crack a smile, even during the hard times. these traits combined with his passion for his job made him an exceptional Firefighter Specialist.

Rick E. Zeni

Rick Zeni dedicated his life to serve as a firefighter for 28 years. He proudly served the LACFD for the last 12 years of his career.
Rick was a one-of-a-kind guy, with a bigger than life personality. Rick loved being with friends and family. His hobbies included surfing, listening to music and cooking. Rick's greatest accomplishments besides having his dream job was being married to his best friend Sugar for 29 years and having 2 amazing sons...Dane and Trace who loved Rick deeply.
Rick is greatly missed by all that knew him.

Patriot Day
Tuesday September 11, 2001 is a day that we shall never forget (click here for a time line of events). Think back....where were you and what were you doing at 0845 EDT on that day? On a call? finishing line up at the station? PT? taking your kids to school? at the gym? Just like our FDNY brothers and sisters. Just another normal day that was about to become anything but normal. 15 years ago....
Local 1014 Members were either at home with their families or serving Los Angeles County citizens when terror struck our hearts and the hearts and souls of all Americans.
The world watched in horror while the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in D.C, and a field in Shanksville Pennsylvania became the vision of terror on and in our homeland.
On that morning Americans stood strong and fought with incredible courage and wrapped in red white and blue, we all rose to the high standards that America was built on.
Firefighters and Paramedics who responded to the Pentagon, Shanksville PA, and the World Trade Center, which took 343 (click here for information) of our bravest, became Americas' symbol of hope and honor and resilience during this time of tragedy.
We all take time today to stay true to our commitment... "We Shall Never Forget". As you move through your day, take time to remember and honor all those who served and gave all including our great Military Personnel in addition to our Firefighters.
Local 1014 Members and all of the people who make up the Los Angeles County Fire Department are the proudest and most honorably serving members in the Country and it is with great pride that we stand together to honor our Country and all who serve. May God bless us all and our Country.

TODAY is Labor Day!
A day that became a Federal Holiday in 1894. Labor Day is a day that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. It also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, parades and athletic events.
In today’s environment we have seen attacks on organized labor from every side. We have seen attacks to take away the very things that strong leaders many years before us fought hard for. Those leaders gave up other items to make sure their future, our future, and those after us, would always be secure. Take a moment today to remember what those labor leaders did for us and be thankful those folks worked so hard to lay the foundation for what we have.
This holiday marks the "end of summer" for most people. The last time to enjoy the sun, the beach, river or a backyard. It is the time to spend time with family and friends one last "summer day". Your 1014 Board of Directors wishes each and every member of our Local and the Los Angeles County Fire Department a happy and safe Labor Day.
As usual we also want to take this time to remind you to be careful, make good choices. Don't make a decision that will change your life or others forever. If you decide to drink PLEASE be responsible. Arrange for a room, call for a taxi or have a pre-assigned designated driver. Again PLEASE DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!
