Happy Birthday Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez (March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993) was an American labor leader and civil rights activist who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers union, UFW) in 1962. Originally a Mexican American farm worker, Chavez became the best known Latino American civil rights activist, and was strongly promoted by the American labor movement, which....click here

Some famous quotes from Cesar Chavez:

"Without a union, the people are always cheated, and they are so innocent".

"Preservation of one's own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures".

"You are never strong enough that you don't need help".

"The fight is never about grapes or lettuce. It is always about people".

"There is no substitute for hard work, 23 or 24 hours a day. And there is no substitute for patience and acceptance".

With a great deal of sorrow we unfortunately announce the passing of our brother, Edward "Corey" Bonestroo. Brother Bonestroo is a member of recruit class 150.  Brother Bonestrro passed away due to an off duty-duty accident.

At this time there are no service details as the Department's Chaplains and Memorial Management Team (MMT) are working with the family to prepare to honor our Brother and his family appropriately. PEER Support has also been activated to assist.

We thank Chief Osby and his team for their efforts to help our Brother's family in their time of need.

When service details become available both your union and the Department will provide that information.

Please keep Brother Bonestroo, his family and his fire family in your thoughts and prayers.

Fraternally,

Dave Gillotte and your Local 1014 Executive Board

GAME DAY!

The entire professional football season comes down to this one game.  This year in two teams will face off for the right to be crowned World Champions.  In Super Bowl 52 the defending champion New England Patriots will defend their title against the Philadelphia Eagles.  They will begin their battle at 1530. Los Angeles County Fire Fighters Local 1014 "Brothers and Sisters" will be getting ready to BBQ, Tailgate, and cheer for their favorite teams in the sporting war of wars.  The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events on the planet.  The history of the game brings back great

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us and most of us will take a little time to eat BBQ, Hot Wings, Hot Dogs and Raise a Cold One or Two as we watch the greatest gridiron game of the year memories for most.

As we take time to remind our members to get set to have a great and safe Super Bowl Sunday, and not put your job and more at risk.

Get a plan for today if you don't already have one. Get set with Uber, Lyft, a Cab, a Designated Driver, or Get a Room to Walk and not Drive!.... This choice could save your job and save a life as we know all too well. We have done much better but occasionally we have a member slip up, some are newer members, some are long time members. Don't make the mistake of not setting a plan this afternoon before you do it up. Have fun and may the spoils go to the victors!

Have a Great Super Bowl Sunday.

We have noticed an error on our 1014 calendar

We noticed that on the February 2018 1014 wall calendar it shows the General Membership meeting to be held on February 6th.  This is a printing error that hopefully will not cause any confusion.

Our next General Membership meeting will be held, like all others, on the 2nd Tuesday in February.  That will be Tuesday February 13th at the hall (3460 Fletcher Ave., El Monte).

We appoligize for the printing error and hope it does not cause any problems.

If you have any questions please let us know (310) 639-1014.

We need you help!
Brothers and Sisters,

It has been brought to our attention that many of your fire stations are having issues with their Diesel Exhaust Systems.   Is this the case at your station?

Your executive board is in need of your assistance.

Please email us back by clicking this link with the stations that are having a difficult time in getting the Diesel exhaust systems fixed or replaced (any part of the system).  Let us know what your issue is.  We understand that some exhaust hoses are tied up to get them out of the way because they are broken  The magnets don't work to hold the exhaust system to the equipment.  This is unacceptable if that is happening in your station.

It’s a proven fact that we are more likely get cancer in our line of work.  When the engines start up in some locations the exhaust now blows into the dorm, day rooms or even right where the turnouts are stored.  UNACCEPTABLE

If this is happening in your station we need to know about it NOW.  PLEASE click on the link above so we can get a true accounting of how many systems are inoperable.

Thank you for assistance with this important issue!

Fraternally,

Dave Gillotte and Your Executive Board

MLK Day 2018

Los Angeles County Fire Fighters Local 1014 would like to take a moment to remember the late Martin Luther King Jr.

Local 1014 is one of the major sponsors of the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Los Angeles. We, along with our Labor Partners in the LA Federation of Labor and a host of top elected officials will take time to reflect on not only a civil rights leader but also a Labor Leader who helped with so many Labor issues for workers including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FSLA) of which firefighters are familiar with every two weeks! Many Labor victories that affect us today were fought for long ago with great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.

Have a great finish on the holiday weekend and remember the man we honor and his work.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

“No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”

- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We need to constantly reflect on the privilege of being blessed to live in
