Game 1 World Series - New York Yankees vs Los Angeles “County’ Dodgers! Bronx vs. Brooklyn is right here in our backyard. Remember to wear your Dodger gear at work and fly the blue flags tall on the rigs as we work to support our hometown team, which has always supported us in our hard times. (See EA 395)
We know some of our stations have struck friendly wagers involving wearing the opposing team jerseys and hats at work should their team not prevail. We encourage family time at the firehouses during the 7 game series that will see the two best teams in baseball who advanced to the series battle it out for the esteemed title of world champions!
It’s time for Dodger baseball - let’s go, Dodgers! Also, please say a little prayer and keep Fernando Valenzuela’s family and the organization close as we also remember and reflect on his amazing career and his heartfelt love of our communities. Fernando changed the face of the fan base with East LA and Spanish fan base mania - Fernando mania with his no-hitters and World Series victories. May he rest in peace.

This week, we also honor the careers of two LACOFD legends. Local 1014 Director Mike Cash and Randy Walton hung their gear up for the last time as they retired from an amazing career with the LA County Fire Department. Both Mike and Randy dedicated more than just their time at the stations, with Randy Walton, one of our amazing lead peer coordinators, and Mike Cash, working on the union board for many years, representing all of us and our families on the front lines of the work we do.
Mike has had a passion for fighting for the everyday firefighter, to protect the front-line workers when protection and representation were needed most. Dedication, passion, and a firm belief in what is right and fair made him a great union director and a passionate advocate for our members and their families. He also helped negotiate contracts and always put his heart and soul into the intense work to get it done for the members. Thank you, Mike, for all you have done, and congrats on a well-earned retirement! |

UPDATE PROMOTIONAL EXAMS
The Department finally listened to us. President Gillotte and VP’s Kobler and Carcioppolo met with the Department to discuss the failing promotional exam process which has left members puzzled after the written exams. Fair job specific exams are what we deserve and Captain ratings from good accurate records reflecting experience, seniority and education as well as a PRI again.
The Department finally agreed to open formal meet and confer bargaining to set a selection process based on seniority and agreed upon criteria to select 200 plus members for Captain and 200 plus members for engineer. And to work to qualify them in a task book and Captains academy / Engineers academy format over 90 days while in service and in the field. We have much work to do to reach an agreement, but the desperately needed relief for the Captains rank is driving a different approach with less Big County and more seniority, quals and experience in the methodology.
This would help reset and catch up the numbers in the ranks. This is a trial only, and if it nets a better process, we can then bargain to make things different permanently. Stay tuned we hit the table to bargain on this early next week.

LA COUNTY FIRE SAFETY - MEASURE E
We are getting close to the finish line with our campaign for Measure E. Check out these samples of our comprehensive digital and mail campaigns, which will continue through election day.
Measure E will be the first additional revenue measure for our Department in 30 years and will bring an additional $152 million annually for stations, equipment, and staffing.
Unlike other County departments, we cannot use general fund money. We need to ensure our Department has a stable and adequate funding source for our needs as we project continued growth over the next 20 years in population and call loads.
This money is critical for the health of our department and, most importantly, for the future of our members and their families. This will fund working condition items like 4-person staffing, upgraded engines, and equipment and help with long-term solutions to our staffing and infrastructure issues.
Encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to vote YES for Measure E! Vote for the future of your Fire Department, vote for your future.
