City of Pomona Update
June 14, 2012
HELP SAVE STAFFING IN POMONA – MONDAY JUNE 18TH 6PM POMONA CITY HALL
BE THERE – BLUE FIRE UNION T-SHIRT
As we have been telling you for the last few months your 1014 Board of Directors has been working with the Fire Chief and his administration to try and solve the budget short falls of the City of Pomona. While we were brought in very late to the process and only after threatening the full steam ahead station closure train we have been at the table. We have had many discussions, both formal and informal, on ways to resolve their 2.4 million dollar shortfall this year and avoid the cities ONLY budget solution of closing a fire station. We have met with the City of Pomona administration as well as Council members to hopefully keep them from eliminating some fire service from the residents of Pomona.
Unfortunately for the citizens of the City of Pomona, in the City Manager’s and City Staff’s opinion, Pomona has run out of time and feels that they have no other option but to close the station. WE DISAGREE! There are viable options that are on the table that need more discussion. These solutions provide for keeping all staffing in place, not increasing response times and providing for Citizen and Fire Fighter Safety. The City Manager and City Staff’s position to simply quit is very unfortunate for the citizens we protect as well as dangerous for our members in Pomona due to the reduced staffing levels that are being proposed.
On MONDAY JUNE 18TH, 6:30 PM, the City Council will be voting to adopt a budget that has in it, among other bad decisions, the elimination of Fire Station 181. This is not just a very bad decision, it is unacceptable in our opinion. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO ALERT THE CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO OVERIDE THE CITY STAFF RECOMMENDATION AND ORDER CONTINUED DISCUSSIONS AT THE TABLE TO FIND OR EXHAUST ALL POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO KEEP STAFFING IN PLACE.
Pay close attention to your email this weekend and be prepared to join your 1014 executive board and attend the Council meeting. We will get all the logistical information out over the weekend through this same 1014 email system.
Please call anyone you know who works, lives or visits Pomona, members who were annexed in to LA County from Pomona or any other City, give them a heads up on this potentially fatal decision and have them attend the meeting Monday June 18th at 6:30 pm to make sure the City Council and City Manager get the message that the members of 1014 will not let them put citizen’s lives at risk in a budget adoption that tries to silently CUT STAFFING AND RESOURCES FOR FIRE AND PARAMEDIC SERVICE, INCREASES REPONSE TIMES AND SHIFTS THAT MONEY BACK INTO THE GENERAL FUND BUDGET TO BALANCE THEIR BUDGET.
If you have any questions, as usual, contact the hall or email us at info@local1014.org
Thank you in advance for your help and support.
