City of Pomona Update
June 1, 2012
As we told you May 24th members of the 1014 Board are continuing to meet with the City Manager, Assistant City Manager and Finance Director of the City of Pomona. Also attending those meetings are Fire Chief Osby, Chief’s Montoya and Stone as well as Debbie Aguirre from the Planning Division of our Department in an effort to solve the short term and long term budget problems of the city. These meetings (most recent, May 29th) have been very informative and productive. We all feel we are continuing to move in the right direction.
Your Executive Board is very encouraged by the level of hands-on participation from our Fire Chief and his staff. They are committed to work together to solve this issue.
Our next big hurdle may be the June 18th Council meeting in Pomona. Since the loss of the RDA funding, Property tax shortfalls, Police officer pension costs and healthcare obligations have hurt the budget of Pomona they have a real financial problem. If we are unable to agree on a joint resolution in time it is possible the city may have to take drastic measures and reduce fire service levels to their citizens. These reductions were slated for July 1st until 1014 was able to put a halt to it and get the City Council to direct the City Manager to sit at the table with 1014 and our Fire Administration to discuss other options.
As you know June 4th we are having another Regional Meeting. This one is to be held at Fire Station 181 at 1700. Food will be served. Once we are done with our meeting we will be walking over to City Hall to continue to stress to the City Council and their staff we are committed to keeping the citizens of Pomona and our firefighters safe with the continued staffing levels.
In the meantime if you hear anything about staffing, budgets or benefits being discussed by anyone other than 1014 please ask questions, take notes and contact 1014 IMMEDIATELY.
If you have any questions please email us at info@local1014.org or call the hall.
See you all June 4th at the meeting!
