As you read this Presidents report in the minutes, your Executive Board will be deep in the heart of Sacramento at a California Professional Firefighters (CPF) training session with firefighters from throughout the state to prepare our message to battle the "Corporate Power Grab Campaign" in November.
This powerful initiative, under the cover of "Fair and Balanced Lobby Reform for All", is designed to actually take away Unions' rights to organize and participate in the political action arena, while actually increasing the ease and power at which special interest corporations can lobby; many of whom are using this as a primer to come after our pensions and our healthcare.
This dangerous initiative has big money and anti-public pension and healthcare interests funding and crafting this very well written and attractive initiative designed to strip our ability to organize and use our collective voice and strength to compete with the interests who are once again trying to go after our defined benefit pensions and our healthcare, especially retiree healthcare. They will go after new employees, current employees, and yes...even existing retirees with a vengeance.
We will be kicking things off with our first of many Regional General Membership Meetings on Thursday April 26th 0900-1200 at the CALABASAS COMMUNITY CENTER - 27040 MALIBU HILLS ROAD, CALABASAS CA 91302. Please make time to come listen to the details of this initiative and what it means to Local 1014 members and our future.
If your getting off work, stop by...if your off and at home, take a road trip to Calabasas and get informed. We will have more opportunities in the coming months, but this is our campaign kick-off General Membership meeting and we will also be covering retirement, healthcare and operations topics as well, so please join us!
One other thing you can do for yourself is to also go to the County INTRAnet portal at mylacounty.gov or through the County INTERnet Website "Highlights" section at http://lacounty.info/was/portal/lac/employees/ to start to learn how to use the new e-HR system to make changes to your personal information, access, view, and manage your personal and work-related information online.
Items like bonus', step placement, accrual of benefit days SRC etc can be viewed and managed on the new e-HR system that is set to go online April 2012. While we will continue to approve and report timecards on IPFIRS, our data will be viewable and managed on the new system.
There are tutorials on how to understand your pay warrant, how to view your accrual rates and your pay steps to ensure you are getting the proper pay for you and your family. There have been countless errors that left money on the table for our members, and this new tool can be effectively used to minimize exposure to these errors, catch them early and fix them in compliance with Article 19 of our MOU.
The Department has taken a very good step to remind all employees to "approve their timecards" and they seek 100% compliance, and the Union strongly supports this goal, but remember 100% of a Sham timecard approval is still 100% Sham...it does our members no good to simply rapid-fire finger sling an A into the column without looking at the time entered, reviewing it, and furthermore following up by checking your pay warrant. Please take the time to do it right.
We will be bringing you more training on this very important subject, but for now don't let this be yet another "checkbox" taking up your day but rather a very useful tool to ensure the right payment has been made for your work. We all love our job, but we deserve our rate for the work also...it is for your family as much as you.
Stay safe out there and thank you for your work....Get Ready for November! Here we go again!
