One of our own is asking for your help
Updated On: Jul 28, 2011

It is very rare that your 1014 Executive Board gets a direct request for assistance from one of our own members. Recently we had a staunch 30-year 1014 member come with his hat in hand to ask for our assistance.

Your board immediately reached into their own pockets to assist with the request. Due to the circumstances and our by-laws we are unable to assist with Local 1014 monies. That is why we are brining the request directly to our membership.

Layne Contreras, assigned to station 144 but currently detailed to EMS to assist our members, swallowed his pride and has asked for help from all of us.

Layne has a neighbor who is a struggling, single mother trying to not only hold down a seasonal job but also raise a fourteen-year-old son. Recently in the early morning hours their home was destroyed by fire. When it was all over they lost pretty much everything. They were able to escape the fire with the clothes on their backs and not much more.

They are living day to day now and trying to find a place to stay. As of right now neighbors have opened up their homes to help but that is no way for a single mother to raise a son. They are in need of a few things and we are hoping that you, our membership, can see it in your hearts to help this struggling family. Layne had exhausted every avenue prior to coming to us. He has been doing everything he can but he has limited resources.

This is where we come in. Layne is asking for just a little something ($5, $10 or more) from our members. The family needs such things as clothing and food. We have hopefully been able to put enough together so far for them to have a permanent roof over their head.

What they need now is:

  • Money – Layne has set up a F&A Credit Union account for donations. The number is 158040-S1. Anything deposited into this account Layne will give directly to the families housing needs.
  • Gift cards for food – Vons, Albertsons and Ralphs are near their home.
  • Gift cards for clothes – Target is close to their home.
  • Gift cards for meals – Subway, Pizza Hut and IN-N Out are closest.

Any of these things can be sent to 1014 at 3460 Fletcher Ave, El Monte, 91731 and we will forward them to Layne for the family.

If you have any questions please contact Layne at laynejill@aol.com or on his cell phone (805) 501-4510

Thank you in advance for stepping up to help this young family get back on their feet. Its times like this where we can open our hearts and wallets to help someone in need that make us who we are.

Thank you from President Gillotte and your Executive Board
