Thousands of union workers, joined by International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa, held a march and rally in downtown Los Angeles Saturday to protest efforts to weaken public employee unions.

Most notably in Wisconsin, but also in Ohio, Indiana, Florida, Michigan, and to a lesser extent California, public employees and their right to collective bargaining are under attack.

Conservative politicians have been trying to weaken unions, saying they are blocking efforts to reform pension and healthcare plans that are adding to budget deficits at all levels of government.

According to the Teamsters, the anti-union efforts are being backed “by the same corporate CEOs that have fought to destroy these rights for private sector workers.”

Thousands of union members from Los Angeles and their allies from community, religious and civil rights groups participated in what was dubbed “Solidarity Saturday: Massive Labor Solidarity Protest in Support of Wisconsin and Workers around the Country,” organizers said.

March 26 was dubbed "Solidarity Saturday" in Los Angeles, as thousands of union workers from the surrounding areas marched the streets of downtown L.A. and rallied in Pershing Square to protest efforts to weaken public-employee unions. Among those marchers were members of the Screen Actors Guild.

MOVE Hollywood, SAG's activist committee, helped organize the members. Originally called Members on the Move, it was formed during the SAG commercials strike of 2000 to organize the picketing and rallies and provide other support. Later its mission broadened; MOVE now stands for "members organizing volunteer efforts."

"Besides our volunteer programs, a very big part of what we do is organize labor unions in support of our members and our sisters and brothers in other labor unions," said Ellen Crawford, a SAG member and the chair of MOVE Hollywood. read more...
