Contract Extension Protects our Pay and Working Conditions
Updated On: Dec 18, 2010

Los Angeles County Fire Fighters Local 1014 has linked contract extension language that turns tentative agreements for protections of our salary and benefits and working conditions into reality.

Local 1014 bargaining unit representatives have been working hard with other Union leaders to get agreement with the County to extend our Fringe Benefit Contract and our Salary Contract.

The contract extensions protect our salary, staffing agreements, bids and transfers, grievance procedures, uniform allowances, retirement and medical contributions, and all other contract, rules and regulations and practices and procedures.

We worked with the County to help fund all of the issues of importance to both the Bargaining Units and the County to reach an agreement.  The County contribution to the Horizons Deferred Compensation Plan will be reduced for the 2011 calendar year, and restored to full strength in the 2012 calendar year while at the same time funding our items.

Many firefighters and paramedics and fire personnel in the state are taking cuts to their retirement benefits and healthcare and taking cuts or deferrals to salary. We are now fully protected for another year on salary and two years on our fringe benefits.  This is so vitally important to our members in this environment and given the budget deficits.

Just take a look at the newspapers and television news stories that have highlighted the attacks on public safety members through the state, and you will soon realize what an achievement this is for us to have these protections in place.

We need California’s property tax values to rise again, and confidence in the economy to help with the stock market gains and sales increases to eventually get out of the hole.  That will take time and could be years if we rely alone on the natural recovery.

We are working on all available options to increase Fire District Revenues with both short-term monies and long-term monies, and we will continue to work with the department to find cost and expense savings where we can.  Our mission will be to protect the staffing levels and the positions we have through this continued storm.

Thank you in advance for your continued support, and congratulations to us all on our success at the bargaining table to bring continued stability to our members and our families.
