Inglewood Budgetary Crisis

Attention Local 1014 members. As you have probably heard, the City of Inglewood is in a severe budgetary crisis and near bankruptcy. They have been operating at a daily deficit to keep City services at levels their residents have become accustomed to.

As a cost cutting measure, the current City Council is considering closing Fire Station 172 temporarily for up to three years. If approved, this closure would go into effect on January 1, 2011. This would make up a 10-14 percent cut in their Fire budget in Inglewood. This cut is in line with concessions that all of the other bargaining groups in the City have already taken within their budgets.

Local 1014 does not support the closure of any fire stations or reductions in personnel at any time. It hurts the citizens of a community, leaving them with less protection and with longer response times. It also increases the work load for our members and stretches our resources even thinner than they already are.

However, fire services have to be funded and paid for. Therefore, we will continue to work with the City of Inglewood and Department to find short and long term funding solutions to their budgetary problems, as well as our own. We will insure that any cost cutting measure is warranted and absolutely necessary. Local 1014 will use all the means at our disposal to try to prevent the station closure or make it as temporary as possible if it does happen, including and up to requesting FEMA SAFER grant funds to keep Fire Station 172 open through these tough economic times.

If a station closure is required and does have to happen despite all of our efforts, Local 1014 will insure that all of our “members” rights according to our MOU are protected regarding the transferring of all personnel

The Local 1014 executive Board will be visiting all Battalion 20 fire stations to give a briefing following the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.
