Friday Update

Brothers & Sisters,

Yesterday, our Brothers and Sisters at Long Beach Firefighters Local 372 commemorated the life of Brother David Rosa. It has been 2 years since we lost Brother Rosa who was shot and killed responding to a structure fire. Our Peer Support Team responded to assist members with the overwhelming loss two years ago and now we need to help our fire family with a heartwarming project for Rosa's son.

An avid lover of old cars, Brother Rosa had been working with his young son Sam on a special project to rebuild a turquoise 1964 Ford pickup. The pair never got the chance to finish the father-son project together. Sam is now hoping to finish the project on his own, in honor of his late father. The funds will go toward putting in a new engine, automatic transmission, power brakes, and more to help the truck drive safely.

State Legislative Update

This week, Local 1014 continued aggressively engaging in political action at every level of government in order to protect our members' benefits, wages, and working conditions.

At the State level, Local 1014 worked with the California Professional Firefighter (CPF) legislative team to lobby our state elected officials on several important pieces of legislation that protect revenue streams and institute critical safety reform. We are pleased to announce the following successful lobbying efforts:

Local 1014 worked tirelessly to lobby state officials for the SCA 2 / ACA 11 The Home Protection for Seniors, Severely Disabled, Families and Victims of Wildfire and Natural Disasters Act. We are pleased to announce that it following our lobbying effort overwhelmingly passed the senate floor yesterday. This legislation will provide needed tax benefits to our most vulnerable and affected residents and will establish a California Fire Response Fund and a County Revenue Protection Fund and continuously appropriate funds for the purpose of reimbursing eligible local agencies.

We would especially like to thank Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins, Senators Maria Elena Durazo, Bob Hertzberg, Holly Mitchell, Anthony Portantino, and all those who voted in favor of the critical legislation.

Additionally, 2nd Vice President Dave Morse provided essential feedback to CPF's EMS Committee regarding the implementation and enforcement of SB 432 at hospitals and the Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) regulatory package.

Finally, our 1014 Brother Derek Urwin continues to assist in lobbying for SB 1044 Firefighting Equipment and Foam: PFAS Chemicals including testifying at the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, assisting in drafting opinion editorial and participating in outreach events with bill author Senator Allen.

At the local level, we continue to partner with the Board of Supervisors to lobby our federal government for our fair share of CARES Act funding for both the County and our contract cities.

As we navigate the changing landscape following COVID-19, it has never been more important that we continue to actively engage in political actions at every level of government to ensure that the needs of our members are met as we continue to serve on the frontlines of protecting our communities.

603/604 Contract

We are set to move forward on the ratification of the 603-604 contract at the Board of Supervisors and appear on the July 7th BOS agenda. Your Local 1014 Executive Board and Negotiating Team worked tirelessly to ensure that our 603/604 members received the recognition and pay they deserve for their tireless work and sacrifice. This is the richest per member non-safety contract in the County. We will continue to update you on the process as it moves forward and we shift towards working on retro checks once ratified.

COVID-19 Exposure Reporting

Finally, we would like to remind our members to continue to remain vigilant as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Within the last week, there has been a significant flare-up of COVID-19 infections among Department personnel directly attributed to daily interactions within our fire stations. Cases have nearly double throughout the Department in the last week alone and the rate of positive PCR tests have quadrupled from 5% of tests coming back positive to over 20% of tests coming back positive.

We are not out of the woods yet, practice social distancing in the stations, and wear your face masks. Additionally, remember to fill out the exposure reports any time you are exposed. This is critical for tracking exposures and protecting you and your families. Reporting not only helps us accurately track who has been exposed but also ensures that you receive the benefits you are entitled if you contract COVID-19.

Please see the attached Department guidelines on Keeping Each Other Safe. Follow them, take this seriously, stay safe and take care of each other out there.

In Solidarity and Strength,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
