Friday Update

Brothers & Sisters,

The past two weeks have been a difficult and painful time for our nation following the murder of George Floyd. We are proud of the professionalism our members have shown as we serve all our residents and our diverse communities.

Over 70 years ago, our Union was founded on principles of solidarity, equal rights, fairness in the workplace, and the elimination of unjust and unfair conditions. But our responsibility does not end there, we are also fighting for the right of all families to enjoy not only good-paying jobs but a nation that supports those principles for everyone regardless of the color of your skin.

As a labor leader, we must be vigilant and work as a family to combat racial injustice and implicit bias not only within our own family but also within our communities. As our nation continues to navigate these issues, our Local 1014 family needs to step up and create a space for our African American members to be supported and heard. Be respectful, listen to each other, and remember we are one family.

In the coming weeks, we will be announcing some partnerships with our healthcare and public safety partners to support Black communities we serve.

1014 Blood Drive

Today Local 1014 was proud to host our first blood drive benefitting The American Red Cross. The Red Cross is experiencing a severe shortage of blood due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has not only limited donors but also available sites for blood drives. We are proud to say that we had a full house today with 100% of our appointment slots filled!

Thank you to all of our partners who came out to support us especially, Supervisor Hilda Solis, who was instrumental in promoting the drive and supporting our efforts as well as the City of El Monte,  Mayor Pro Tem Maria Morales, Councilmember Jerry Velasco, and City Clerk Cathi Eredia. We would also like to thank our own LACOFD Deputy Fire Chief Jon O'Brien and Medical Director Clayton Kazan for showing up to support our efforts and give blood!

We are looking to host more drives in the future to help fill the critical need for blood in our communities. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this a successful blood drive!!

Please remember to stay safe and take care of each other out there.

In Solidarity and Strength,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
