Friday Update 8-29-25
Updated On: Sep 08, 2025

Brothers and Sisters,

On behalf of the Local 1014 Executive Board, representing more than 3,400 Firefighters, Paramedics, Dispatchers, Pilots, Wildland Firefighters, Forestry, and Health HazMat personnel, we wish you and your families a safe and happy Labor Day!

As you enjoy this well-deserved holiday weekend, please celebrate responsibly. If you’re drinking, don’t drive—use Lyft, Uber, a cab, a designated driver, or public transportation. Make safe plans ahead of time, whether that means arranging a ride or a place to stay. Protect yourself, your loved ones, and your career by making smart choices.

And remember, if this holiday weekend feels overwhelming, you are never alone. Local 1014 has a strong peer support team and resources available to help whenever you need them. Stay safe, enjoy the holiday, and thank you for all you do to serve our communities.

It is with great sadness that The Los Angeles County Firefighter’s Benefit & Welfare Association is setting up a fundraiser for the family of Firefighter Paramedic Jerry Guzman. Jerry tragically lost his life while recovering from an on duty injury.

Jerry has been a firefighter with the Los Angeles County Fire Department for the last 23 years serving faithfully. FFPM Guzman was last assigned to Fire Station 32 in the City of Azusa.

His family is at a total loss with the unexpected expenses of a sudden tragedy like this. We ask that you look into your hearts and support our brother firefighters.

A flag ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at:

Los Angeles County Fire Station 32
605 North Angeleno Avenue
Azusa, CA 91702

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at:

Whittier Area Community Church
8100 Colima Road
Whittier, CA 90605

Interment following the memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., at:

Queen of Heaven Cemetery and Mortuary
2161 Fullerton Road
Rowland Heights, CA 91748

We extend our deepest prayers and condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of FFPM Guzman.

STATE LEGISLATION UPDATE

We continue to work tirelessly on a package of firefighter-specific legislation to strengthen and protect our profession. The cornerstone of these efforts is AB 1383 (Asm. Tina McKinnor), sponsored by California Professional Firefighters (CPF), which seeks to level the playing field on retirement security for our post-PEPRA members.

Assembly Member McKinnor has been a true champion for firefighters, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with her in this critical fight. AB 1383 recognizes the risks and dangers of our job, using real data to support lowering the retirement age from 57 to 55, expanding retirement caps, and increasing local bargaining flexibility on retirement changes.
