Friday Update 3-29-24
Updated On: Apr 09, 2024

Brothers & Sisters,

As we prepare to celebrate Easter this weekend, we want to thank all our men and women working in stations away from their families as we face an oncoming storm.

Please remember to be safe and take care of each other this weekend. On behalf of the Local 1014 Executive Board, The Local 1014 Health Trust, and our staff, we wish you a safe and healthy Easter weekend.

Active Duty Death of LACoFD Fire Fighter Jonathan Van Oeffelen

It is with great sadness that we share the Active Duty Death of Brother Jonathan Van Oeffelen on Sunday, March 24, 2024. Brother Van Oeffelen was assigned to Fire Station 52 in the City of Vernon.

We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family and friends of Brother Van Oeffelen.

To ensure the proper care and support of the Van Oeffelen family and our personnel, we have activated the Department’s chaplains, Peer Support team, behavioral health clinicians, and Memorial Management team.

Thank you for respecting the privacy of the Van Oeffelen family during this extraordinarily difficult time.

Our mission is always to be there for our brothers and sisters in the fire service – and especially during your greatest time of need. If you find yourself struggling, please reach out to one of our trained Peer Support Team Members. Please click the Peer Support Team Roster, which includes your colleagues in the LACoFD who will maintain your confidentiality and provide you with support during difficult times.

The Local 1014 / LACoFD Behavioral Health and Peer Support Programs are here for our members and families, and we are ready to assist with free services that are 100% confidential and supported by both specialized Mental Health Professionals and highly-trained Peer Support Team Members (many of whom have been through the same issues that you may be experiencing right now). YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

The Los Angeles County Firefighter’s Benefit & Welfare Association is hosting a fundraiser to support the family of Jonathan Van Oeffelen. If you are able, donate at the GoFundMe above and share it on your social media.
Health & Safety Matter – Del Valle Training Center

Local 1014 has notified the Department of potential health risks at our Del Valle Training Facility from the Chiquita Canyon landfill. We are currently investigating how it affects our Del Valle facility and all of our members assigned or visiting that training facility.

Please see the attached letter from our attorney to the Department. Local 1014 is committed to ensuring that the Department prioritizes the health and safety of our members. We will keep you informed as we move forward.

LA County Fire Safety Measure
Visit www.lacountyfiresafety.com to learn more.

Local 1014 continues aggressively moving forward on the signature gathering for our ballot initiative to secure more funding for our Department, including staffing, infrastructure, apparatus, and equipment. We are currently gathering signatures in locations throughout the district.

REMINDER: If you get questions while in the field working or calls at the station, you can confirm there is a citizen's initiative for additional funding for the LA County Fire District. You can also direct them to the website above or any Local 1014 Executive Board member.

If someone approached you in the station asking for firefighters to gather signatures or sign petitions, do not accept. Get their name and ask them to leave the station.

We have a lot of work to do to secure those votes, but together, we can win for the future of our Department and our families. Thank you all in advance for your consideration of our collective efforts.

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
