Brothers & Sisters,

Today, we celebrate International Women's Day and the amazing, strong, and inspirational women of the LA County Fire Department and Local 1014 who are not only examples of success but are leading the way for future generations of women in the fire service.

This week, we also saw the launch of LACOFD's Recruitment Spotlight with Becoming a Firefighter in collaboration with Cal-JAC and Fire Fighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC).

Thank you to our firefighter panelists, talented host, production team, and administrative team behind the scenes for lending your time to help potential applicants interested in the LACoFD learn more about the firefighter trainee (FFT) position and application process.

Local 1014, with the help of the Board of Supervisors, successfully negotiated with the Department and the Department of Human Resources to use the FCTC written exam in a pilot along with our existing CPAT and EMT requirements for recruitment.  The long-awaited move to a written exam that has embedded pre-test recruitment and the ability to have an open competitive exam so our list never gets stale was the result of a hard negotiation process.

Chief Marrone has been very supportive, along with Supervisor Janice Hahn, who put forward a BOS motion that Local 1014 helped write to enable this pilot to use the CAL-JAC FCTC written.  We also want to thank all affinity partners in the Womens Fire League, Stentorians, Los Bomberos, and our API members with AOC and Training Services help.

LOCAL 1014 ELECTION RECAP

This Election Tuesday, we worked long into the evening courting our political action efforts with our partners, and we had many important victories at every level of government for our members.

Our Local Political Action Plan always begins with our local elected officials and state officials.  Local 1014 had a victorious night for our State, LA County, and City PAC races. The Local 1014 endorsement brand is strong and one of the most sought-after endorsements for any candidate.

The most important elections we participate in are our LA County Board of Supervisors races, and all three of our endorsed candidates for Supervisor came in first place, with Supervisors Janice Hahn, Holly Mitchell, and Kathryn Barger winning outright with an overwhelming majority.

Additionally, we had big victories with our City PAC in all city council races in which we gave candidate endorsements. This is critical to keeping our contract and fee for service cities funded and continuing to provide resources to service those communities. On the State level, we had a near-clean sweep with our endorsed candidates and some promises of some big races to continue into November.

As we celebrate our victories at the Board of Supervisors and our local cities and prepare for the next steps for funding, we will continue to fight for our members' wages, hours, and working conditions. The existing budget will be our top priority as we work to get our LA County Fire Safety Measure on the ballot in November.

IAFF Alfred Whitehead Legislative Conference

The IAFF Alfred K. Whitehead Legislative Conference, has long been the cornerstone of the IAFF’s legislative efforts. Firefighters have won many significant victories over the years - from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program, to defeating legislation designed to undermine our members’ defined benefit pensions - due in large measure to the work of union leaders at this conference.

Named after Alfred K. Whitehead former Local 1014 President and President Emeritus of the IAFF, this conference provides our Union the opportunity to advocate directly with our local federal legislators on key issues, including legislation impacting your jobs, health, safety, and economic security.

This year's issues included:
  • Save the AFG/SAFER Grant Programs
  • Support Survivors of Fallen Public Safety Officers
  • Support the Development of Next- Generation Turnout Gear
  • Protect Fire Fighters’ Rights to Free Speech
  • Support Collective Bargaining for Fire Fighters and Emergency Medical Workers
Political action is one of the most important things we do as a Union to effect change for our member’s wages, benefits and working conditions. No matter what your political views, there is no question that as a Union we need to be active with all our elected representatives at every level of government to ensure we continue to have the health and safety protections and economic security we need and deserve as we sacrifice to keep our communities safe.

Local 1014 continues aggressively moving forward on the signature gathering for our ballot initiative to secure more funding for our Department, including staffing, infrastructure, apparatus, and equipment. We are currently gathering signatures in locations throughout the district.

REMINDER: If you get questions while in the field working or calls at the station, you can confirm there is a citizen's initiative for additional funding for the LA County Fire District. You can also direct them to the website above or any Local 1014 Executive Board member.

If someone approached you in the station asking for firefighters to gather signatures or sign petitions, do not accept. Get their name and ask them to leave the station.

We have a lot of work to do to secure those votes, but together, we can win for the future of our Department and our families. Thank you all in advance for your consideration of our collective efforts.

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
