Political Action Success!

It was another busy but very successful City election cycle for Local 1014. Twenty two (22) of twenty five (25) candidates that we endorsed were successful in their bid for public office. Measure GG in the City of El Monte also passed after an aggressive campaign by Local 1014, keeping $4 million in the City’s budget that will help keep all of their Fire Stations open!

Going into the November 5, 2013 City Elections you’re Local 1014 Executive Board spent many hours in interviews with City Council and Mayoral Candidates to insure that we endorsed and supported candidates that have or will support Fire and Life Safety in their communities. Not with just words and promises but with action.  We take our endorsement of candidates very seriously and endorse and support candidates that support us regardless of their party affiliation. We are loyal to those who are loyal to us!

After a successful June 11, 2013 election cycle, where we helped oust two incumbent council members in the City of Inglewood and replaced them with two new council members that want to re open Fire Station 172 to provide the citizens of their community the proper level of fire protection.  We got right back on our horses in August and conducted over 100 candidate interviews for the 19 contract cities that we service who were having elections. At the end of our process we endorsed 25 candidates and 22 of them were elected!  That is an 88 percent success rate!

We also had key victories in 3 of our fee for service cities, El Monte, Hawthorne and Lynwood.  In El Monte we helped keep all three incumbent candidates in office that have supported us through out their time in office. Mayor Andre Quintero, Council members Norma Macias and Juventino “J” Gomez.  We also insured that Measure GG passed which was crucial to preserving the City’s budget and keeping much needed services in the City funded including its Fire Stations. In Hawthorne we ran a campaign to get Chris Brown elected Mayor. The City’s first African American Mayor! Our long time partner Council member Alex Vargas was also re-elected helping keep a balance on the council. In the City of Lynwood 1014 supported new comers Edwin Hernandez and top vote getter Jose Solache were victorious in their bid for Council.  Thus giving Local 1014 a clean sweep (100%) in our fee for service Cities! Giving Local 1014 a continuing voice on these Councils!

Rest assured that you’re Executive Board will continue to measure twice and cut once in regards to the candidates we endorse and support. Insuring that we will continue to have open lines of communications with the Councils of the Cities that our Department and members serve. In these times of political ill will and turmoil it is more important than ever that our voice be heard loud and often!
