Brothers and Sisters,

IAFF Legislative Conference: Fighting for Firefighters, Together Across the Aisle

The IAFF Legislative Conference convenes in Washington, D.C., to lay out the legislative agenda for the upcoming session. The current political climate is volatile and highly partisan, making it difficult to navigate. Firefighters, however, have long worked with both parties and engaged politically to achieve support, and more importantly, votes, for the issues that matter to our members.

Most recently, during the last administration, the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) was signed into law. As a result, members who worked jobs that included Social Security will now receive the full Social Security benefits they earned through their credits. This legislation had been worked on through multiple administrations and required bipartisan support and the signature of President Joe Biden to become law, and we got it done.

Under the current administration, we continue to face challenges that require careful navigation. Our work remains focused on advocating for the issues that impact our members and their families. Nothing is handed to us freely; we fight for every gain that protects firefighters.

Once again, the IAFF worked both sides of the aisle, and President Donald Trump signed the Honor Act, recognizing cancer as a presumptive line-of-duty cause of death for firefighters. This law removes the burden of having to pinpoint specific exposures and extends Public Safety Officer Benefits (PSOB) to survivors.

This federal recognition has been a long time coming and required bipartisan cooperation in a divided Congress. Leadership on the bill came from Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), along with Reps. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) and Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa.).

We thank members of both parties and both administrations, and we thank both Presidents for signing these impactful pieces of legislation that IAFF unions from the United States and Canada, representing 364,143 members, worked tirelessly to achieve.

Looking ahead, what will we work on next? You can preview the priorities in theIAFF Legislative Issues Book.

We also want to recognize Charlie Martinez, who represents Federal Firefighters in California through the California Professional Firefighters (CPF) as the 5th District representative. Charlie works tirelessly on behalf of California’s federal firefighter locals to advance their issues, many of which have long lagged behind and remain deeply concerning.

Charlie helped bring federal firefighters to Local 1014’s union hall when then–Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh joined us for a full day of discussions about cancer presumption for federal firefighters. Those conversations led to administrative changes aimed at improving cancer recognition for the men and women who fight fires and run EMS, just like firefighters across the country.

Now, with the HONOR Act signed into law, that work continues to move forward. Our Local is proud of the strong relationship we have with our federal firefighter brothers and sisters, and we will continue to stand with them at the national level as they navigate an uncertain future. The U.S. Fire Administration is currently being reestablished, and the path forward will bring many challenges and opportunities as that process unfolds.

STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE

The IAFF will once again bring together union leaders, general members, training officers, chiefs, and management representatives for a week of training and education focused on both union leadership and operational excellence.

This unique event creates an opportunity to combine training with the political and labor realities of our profession. It brings labor and management together in a setting where meaningful off campus discussions can take place to advance the issues that matter most to firefighters. These conversations often lead to real collaboration between IAFF union representatives and IAFC chief officers, resulting in stronger laws, better policies, and improved operational best practices across the fire service.

IAFF Fire Ground Survival (FGS) is one of the most notable examples of what this collaboration can achieve. The FGS program  which now trains firefighters across the United States and Canada in critical skills such as Mayday and Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) operations, was born out of the partnership between the IAFF and IAFC. Over the years, many Local 1014 members have served as instructors and master instructors in the FGS program, and we thank them for their continued leadership and dedication to firefighter safety.

Other major initiatives have also grown from this collaboration, including Peer Support and Behavioral Health Programs, as well as the Wellness- Fitness Initiative, which has now been in place for more than 25 years. This comprehensive program, featuring physical and mental health support and mandatory annual physical exams, has saved countless firefighter lives and continues to set the national standard for firefighter wellness.

This year’s Strive for Excellence conference will be held at the National Carpenters Union Training Center in Las Vegas, where multiple buildings and facilities will be transformed from construction trade training spaces into hands-on environments for firefighting, EMS, and union leadership training.

We also encourage members to register for the IAFF Behavioral Health Webinar. These sessions always provide valuable information and resources for our members.

Our Los Angeles County Peer Support Team, along with our outstanding behavioral health professionals, helped build many of the programs now used across the fire service. Their work has made a real difference, and the lives of our members are better for it. Register here.

Honoring Aaron Staussner and Julie Sherman – Jack Webb Award Recipients

Founding partners of what is now Straussner, Sherman, Lonne, Tregar, Helquist & Krupnik, Aaron Staussner and Julie Sherman are finally taking a little time for themselves after decades of extraordinary service.

This weekend, we join so many others in honoring them as recipients of the Jack Webb Award, presented annually by the LAPD Police Museum to individuals whose lifelong dedication to first responders has profoundly impacted our lives.

Aaron and Julie built a workers’ compensation law firm dedicated to representing the members of Local 1014, along with other firefighter unions and law enforcement members throughout Los Angeles County. Their work has ensured that the years of injuries, trauma, and sacrifices made by first responders are properly recognized and accounted for in their retirements.

For many years, they have also represented the Local 1014 Health and Welfare Plan, advocating for our members in workers’ compensation matters and helping secure the treatment and care they deserve—especially when the department or the County has failed to do so. Time and again, Aaron, Julie, and their exceptional firm have stood beside us, protecting the people who protect our communities.

Congratulations to Aaron and Julie on an incredible journey, all that you have done for us, and all that you will now do for yourselves.
Two Campaign Kickoffs- Local 1014 Leads the Way!

Local 1014 is one of the strongest and most well-respected unions in both the LA Federation of Labor and the California Federation of Labor. While we may not be the largest union in the 850,000-member Federation, we consistently punch above our weight. Pound for pound, we are one of the strongest organizations in the labor movement. Our brothers and sisters in labor, and the elected officials we work with to advance our priorities, recognize our work and our strength. That’s why many of them will be joining us at our Union Hall for two special occasions.

Maria Elena Durazo, one of our strongest votes and most powerful supporters in the California State Senate, will kick off her campaign for LA County Board of Supervisors at Local 1014 on Friday, March 27. Labor unions from across the movement will join us, along with our public safety partners ALADS, PPOA, and LACOLA, as well as the Building Trades. Safer LA County deeply appreciates Senator Durazo’s support for our efforts to improve the working conditions and safety of our members.

We will also host Supervisor Hilda Solis, who will launch her campaign for U.S. Congress, District 38. One of the most influential leaders in the country, Supervisor Solis has served in Congress, led the nation as U.S. Secretary of Labor, and now serves on the LA County Board of Supervisors. She returns to Congress to continue her work representing communities that include many of our fire stations and the neighborhoods we serve.

Supervisor Solis has been a steadfast supporter of our members, cosponsoring our binding arbitration motion, working to protect our firefighters, maintain the resources we need, and consistently standing with us because she understands firsthand the work we do and the risks we take to protect our communities.

Thank you, Supervisor Solis, for your continued leadership and support. You can always count on Local 1014.

BEAR CLASSIC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

On Saturday, April 4, Local 1014 members will come together to support our Fire Explorers at the annual Bear Classic Softball Tournament, a fundraiser dedicated to the next generation of firefighters. Our fire families will descend upon the Field of Dreams to compete for the Bear Classic Perpetual Trophy and a full year of bragging rights.

Last year’s champions, the FIRE FACTORY, Fire Station 16 with Engine 16, Squad 16, and Engine 9 of Station 1120-A, and their ragtag team of scrappers, captured the title after a long day of competition. Known as the “Border Bandits,” and sponsored by PulsePoint, they’ll be back this year looking to defend their crown. But with so many talented teams and players returning to the field, the competition will be fierce as everyone fights for the trophy.

Your Union and Local 1014 Health & Welfare will be sponsoring the food, with The Habit on site to keep our families fueled throughout the day. Health & Welfare staff will also be available to meet with members and their families to answer questions about healthcare coverage and benefits. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our member-driven health plan, including dental and orthodontia, vision, behavioral health, family planning, and many other important medical benefits.

Bring your questions, bring your family, and come enjoy a great day of softball and solidarity. Let the games begin!

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
