Friday Update 12-19-25
Updated On: Jan 04, 2026

Brothers and Sisters,

As of right now, we still have five individuals who have been recalled back-to-back for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

We are again reaching out on behalf of our fellow members to ask that anyone who has both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off and is willing and able to work consider volunteering for one of these individuals.

We want ALL of our members to have the opportunity to spend at least one day at home with their families.

Battalion 1

  • CA RYAN GENNARO
  • CA KORY LOMBARD
  • CA STEVE HARPER

Battalion 5-23

  • CA Corey Lovers
  • CA Robert Martin

If you are willing and able to work one of these spots either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, please reach out to these individuals directly or to the Battalion Card Files ASAP.

Honor Act Signed Into Law: Occupational Cancer Now Recognized as a Line-of-Duty Death

In a landmark moment for America’s firefighters, the IAFF-endorsed Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act has officially been signed into law, securing federal recognition of occupational cancer as a line-of-duty death.

The Honor Act passed both chambers of Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support — 312 votes in the House and 77 in the Senate and was signed by President Donald Trump on Thursday, Dec. 19, as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

What the Honor Act Does
The Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act updates the federal Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) program to recognize certain cancers as presumed job-related for fire fighters. This is critical, because it removes the unfair burden on families to prove a specific exposure caused the illness — something that is often impossible given the nature of the job. Under this law, survivors are now eligible for:
  • Federal death benefits
  • Educational benefits for eligible family members
  • Presumptive recognition of 20 types of cancers commonly linked to fire service exposure, including brain, lung, prostate, breast, esophageal, and other cancers that have impacted our ranks.
A Bipartisan Win — Built on Years of Union Advocacy
This victory was made possible through a truly bipartisan effort led by Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) and Reps. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) and Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa.) — alongside years of sustained organizing and advocacy by the IAFF, local unions, survivors, and fire fighters across the country.

The IAFF made the Honor Act a major priority at the 2025 Alfred K. Whitehead Legislative Conference, backed by multiple lobbying days on Capitol Hill where members and survivors pushed for long-overdue recognition of the cancer crisis in the fire service.

This is a hard-won victory — and a powerful reminder of what our union can accomplish when we fight together.

LACFD CHAPLAINS BENEVOLENT FUND

Our Chaplain’s office does so much for our sick and fallen. Did you know that our Chaplains rely on donations when it comes to family travel and lodging? We are asking all our members to support and donate a minimum of $10 a month to the LACFD CHAPLAINS BENEVOLENT FUND.

The Chaplains’ Benevolent Fund exists to support Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel and their families during life’s most challenging moments. Your contribution directly helps:
  • Spiritual Support – Chaplains assist during the passing of a loved one by providing emotional and spiritual care, and coordinating services, celebrations of life, and funerals.
  • Financial Assistance for Families of Critically Sick or Injured Members – Helping with travel, lodging, and unexpected expenses while families support their firefighter.
  • Department Memorial & Ceremony Support – Assists with costs related to official memorial services and honors.
  • Support for Families Traveling to Memorials – Ensuring families attending fallen firefighter memorials do not bear the burden of travel, lodging, registration, or other necessary expenses.
Your participation ensures that no family, including yours, faces hardship alone. Please follow these six steps and donate.

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
