Brothers and Sisters,

This past week, our Local 1014 Health Plan Trustees and staff attended the 71st Annual Employee Benefits Conference (IFEBP) — the biggest event of the year for union benefit plans.

We joined benefit leaders and experts from across the country to learn about the latest in firefighter health care, mental health support, cancer prevention, and wellness programs. We also explored new ways to keep our plan strong, affordable, and innovative for our members and families.

Throughout the week, we attended sessions focused on:

  • Administration of benefit and trust funds — helping our Plan operate more efficiently.
  • Health & welfare topics — exploring trends in health care delivery, mental health, cost management, and benefit design.
  • Fiduciary responsibility — ensuring our Board of Trustees continues to act in the best interests of all Plan participants.
  • Public-plan issues and benefit megatrends — tailoring best practices to the unique needs of our public-safety workforce.
  • Network building — connecting with over 5,000 peers across the benefits industry to share what’s working in other fire locals, public-sector plans, and union-administered funds.
  • Safeguarding Retirement SECURE 2.0 Act — ensuring we have flexibility to encourage compliance and facilitate the adoption of discretionary features.

We’re bringing back new ideas and best practices to strengthen the Local 1014 Health Plan, and we’ll be sharing updates soon on what’s next. Stay safe, stay healthy, and thank you for trusting us to look out for your health and your family’s well-being.

Welcome Home USA-2. Families gathered together this evening to welcome home LACoFD USA-2 home from their U.S. Department of State mission in Jamaica. The LACoFD extends our deepest gratitude to all USA-2 team members, along with our colleagues assigned to Virginia Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue for their dedicated service in helping residents and communities in their time of need. We wish all affected by Hurricane Melissa continued healing, hope, and progress as recovery continues.

Cal-JAC 17th Biennial Conference

The Local 1014 Executive Board proudly participated in the Cal-JAC 17th Biennial Conference, joining fire service leaders from across California for three days of critical training, collaboration, and discussion on the future of our profession.

Throughout the week, our Executive Board members attended general sessions and took part in a wide range of workshops focused on today’s most pressing challenges — including lithium-ion battery emergencies, recruiting and retaining women in the fire service, restoring resilience, and communication-based de-escalation.

These sessions provided valuable insights that our Board is bringing back to Local 1014, with the goal of strengthening our programs, improving member support, and ensuring our union remains on the cutting edge of training and safety standards. Board members also connected with leaders from departments statewide, sharing experiences and strategies that will help shape local initiatives in the coming year..

Contract Update: Still Pushing Forward

Behind the scenes, our negotiations team continues to make steady progress. We anticipate receiving key financial figures from the CEO this week, and we’ve emphasized that this matter remains of utmost importance to our membership during these challenging economic times.

We have secured confirmation for another meeting after the 15th to review the valuations on our proposals. We will also continue working closely with our public safety partners, ALADS and LACOLA,  to bring this process to a strong and timely close. We remain fully engaged with the Board and are keeping steady pressure on all parties involved.

Peer Support Retirement Seminar

The Department’s Peer Support Team is hosting an in-person retirement seminar for Department employees and their spouses. The seminar will focus on the challenges of retirement, how to plan for the retirement transition, and what the future holds after retirement. Retired peer support members will provide an introduction to their mentorship program, and the Department’s behavioral health professionals will also be available.
