LACoFD USA-2 Supporting Hurricane Melissa Response in Jamaica
Local 1014 is proud to recognize our brothers and sisters from Los Angeles County Fire Department USA-2, who continue to serve on the front lines of international disaster response.
This week, LACoFD USA-2 has been providing vital support and assessments as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica. Their mission includes clearing roads, conducting area assessments by foot and air, and delivering humanitarian aid to communities hit hardest by the storm. So far, the team has distributed 2,000 food kits by helicopter to residents in areas cut off by storm damage and road closures. They continue to perform medical assessments, clear debris, and support local agencies as recovery efforts expand.
Local 1014 extends our deepest thanks and respect to the members of LACoFD USA-2 for their dedication and professionalism. |

Contract Update: Still Pushing Forward
Our negotiations team continues to push hard behind the scenes. This week, we met with another Board office as part of our ongoing effort to move the contract discussions forward.
We’re still waiting on the acting CEO to return with key numbers, but we’ve made it clear that this issue remains a priority for our members—especially in these uncertain economic times. The good news is that we’ve secured confirmation for another meeting next week, and we’re staying fully engaged with the Board to keep the pressure on.
We know how important this is to all our members, and we’ll continue to keep everyone informed as progress is made. The grind continues, and we remain committed to securing a fair and meaningful outcome for everyone. |

Standing Together for Men’s Health this #Movember
This #Movember, we’re proud to stand shoulder to shoulder in support of men’s health. Across the fire service and beyond, we’re raising awareness about mental health, suicide prevention, and the importance of early detection for testicular and prostate cancers. Let’s make a difference — for our brothers, fathers, friends, and all the men who give their all every day.
In the latest episode of CPF Fire Wire, President Brian K. Rice sits down with Oxnard Fire Department Chief Alexander Hamilton for a candid and powerful conversation about mental health in the fire service. Together, they explore the unique challenges firefighters face both on and off the line, and share real, practical strategies for:
- Recognizing early signs of crisis in yourself and your crew
- Taking meaningful steps to protect your own mental health
- Offering genuine support when a fellow firefighter needs it most
This conversation opens the door to an honest dialogue — a reminder that caring for mental health is just as vital as the job itself.

Continuing Our Work to Elect Firefighter-Friendly Leaders
This week, Local 1014 continued our ongoing effort to interview candidates for the California State Legislature — a critical part of our mission to ensure that elected officials understand firefighter issues and are committed to supporting us.
Our endorsement process is extensive and collaborative. Together with other fire locals across California, we engage in thorough interviews to evaluate each candidate’s stance on key firefighter priorities, including:
- Support for public safety ballot measures and state budget funding for CAL FIRE and contract counties.
- Protection of retirement and healthcare security, including necessary changes for PEPRA members.
- Commitment to PFOS and cancer reduction initiatives.
- Advocacy on lithium-ion battery safety and other energy-related public safety legislation.
- Protection of fire-based EMS systems, preventing privatization and models like Placentia from spreading
This week’s interviews were hosted by UFLAC Local 112, and we extend our thanks to our brothers and sisters at the City of Los Angeles for hosting. Our work doesn’t stop here. We’ll continue interviewing candidates across the state in the weeks ahead to help elect leaders who will stand up for firefighters and the communities we protect.
This process is vital to our profession’s funding, health, and safety. We compete for state resources and actively shape legislation to ensure that critical protections — such as Cancer Presumptions 1 and 2, cancer research and education funding, wildfire and camp funding, PFOS mitigation, and energy safety laws — remain priorities in Sacramento. By staying engaged and united, we make sure firefighters’ voices are heard where it matters most — in the State Capitol. |
