$10 Million Win for Firefighter Training & Paramedic Pipeline
Local 1014 is proud to celebrate a big win for our members and the future of the fire service. Assemblymember Jessica Colazo joined us to present a check marking a major budget victory—the passage of AB123, the Higher Education Trailer Bill—which includes a $10 million investment in the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC).
Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte, along with Assistant Chief John O’Brien, proudly accepted on behalf of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. This funding will directly support our Fire Department–sponsored Paramedic Class, giving people from our communities the opportunity to earn their EMT and Paramedic certifications on their journey to becoming firefighter-paramedics.
Thanks to the hard work and partnership of the California Professional Firefighters (CPF), and the leadership of Speaker Robert Rivas and Budget Chair Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, this funding will expand access to high-quality training and apprenticeship opportunities. It will help ensure we have a strong, diverse, and highly prepared firefighting workforce—something more important than ever as climate change brings longer, more dangerous fire seasons.

STATE POLITICAL ACTION UPDATE
Political action is our most powerful tool in advocating for our members and their families. Your Local 1014 Executive Board takes the endorsement process at every level of government very seriously and we critically evaluate each candidate.
|
|
In addition to our local county and city races, we also play heavily in state races for State Senate and State Assembly races through the California Professional Firefighters our state union.
This week, we began the cluster interviews process for all state races within our jurisdiction. We are working hard together with our neighboring local affiliates, including Orange County, Kern County, Anaheim, and others, to choose candidates that are strong on state fire issues like state funding for fire and EMS services, wall time issues, pensions, and workers' compensation reform, all of which are greatly affected by our state legislature. This is a long process, but we will have more in those endorsements as we move closer.
Special thanks to our CPF political and legislative staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure we are well-prepared for these interviews and that all candidates are interviewed.
