Congratulations to Recruit Class 177, who have officially graduated from the Cecil Royal Gehr Training Center and now take their place in LA County Fire – Local 1014 history as the next generation of Firefighters and Firefighter Paramedics. These recruits are ready to serve and protect the residents of Los Angeles County and our Contract Cities with pride and dedication.
Over the course of more than three grueling months, these men and women endured intensive training — including IAFF Fireground Survival and Mayday procedures, hose lays, ladders, search and rescue, and emergency medical skills — all to earn the esteemed Bear on their County badge.
Welcome to the job, probationary firefighters. Your journey is just beginning. Let’s continue to train, mentor, and mold these boots into the exceptional Brothers and Sisters our communities count on every day.

Cutting-Edge Care in Action: Mobile Stroke Unit
This is a powerful reminder of how LA County Fire and the County of Los Angeles remain at the forefront of lifesaving technology and innovation.
While Engine 9, with Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte and his crew, was on a move-up assignment in Station 159’s area, they received a call for a possible stroke. Engine 9 responded alongside Squad 21, just returning from a structure fire, and quickly found a patient exhibiting slurred speech and left-side weakness — classic signs of a stroke.
Within minutes, vitals were taken, an IV was established, and the patient was placed on a monitor. Shortly after, Mobile Stroke Unit 1, operated by UCLA Health in partnership with LA County Fire, EMS Agency, and the Board of Supervisors, arrived on scene.
A CT scan and contrast scan were immediately performed, confirming an ischemic stroke caused by a blockage. Thrombolytics were administered on the spot — helping reverse the stroke symptoms and potentially preventing long-term brain damage. This level of care, delivered directly in the field within 10 minutes of the 911 call, is made possible by grant funding, LA County BOS support, and strong partnerships. Today, there are three Mobile Stroke Units serving LA County, with more potentially on the horizon..
