| Welcome Home USA-2!
Local 1014 proudly welcomes home the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s international Urban Search and Rescue team, USA-2, and its six canine teams. Activated by the U.S. Department of State following the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, the 71-person team deployed from Pacoima with approximately 84,000 pounds of specialized rescue equipment.
For 11 days, USA-2 personnel operated in unstable debris fields and collapsed structures, performing round-the-clock search, rescue and recovery work. The team conducted aerial and ground damage assessments, evaluated damaged buildings and used specialized tools and technical expertise to reach areas that conventional crews could not safely access. During the operation, USA-2 took part in a successful rescue that brought a trapped victim to safety.
Local 1014 extends its sincere appreciation to Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath for coming to Pacoima to meet the returning team and help welcome its personnel and canine partners home. Her presence recognized the extraordinary work performed by USA-2 and the sacrifices required whenever our members answer the call far from home.
To every member of USA-2—and to Jet, Greta, Dee, Joey, Mattis and Roma—welcome home.
Your skill, courage, and compassion carried the best of the Los Angeles County fire service across borders and into communities facing unimaginable loss. You made our Department, our County, and Local 1014 proud.

Negotiations Update
Your Local 1014 bargaining team was back at the table yesterday for another full day of negotiations. We remain united with all public safety unions and committed to holding out for a fair contract—one that recognizes the employees who put everything on the line and prioritizes our Plan C/PEPRA and Tier 2 medical members.
The Sheriff’s union, Lifeguards, and Fire continued to face an obstinate and stubborn CEO. This fight will not be easy, but it will be worth it. We must remain strong and refuse to accept anything less than what our members need, have earned, and deserve.
We made significant progress toward securing a fourth year in the contract, which would prevent us from returning to the bargaining table immediately before the Olympics. We also gained ground on several Plan C proposals designed to help our members provide medical coverage for their families and strengthen their retirement security.
Although we cannot share every detail while negotiations are underway, know this: We will not settle or recommend a contract to the membership unless it is fair and properly values our employees, as the County should.
We will also continue to press the Fire Chief for his public, genuine, and unequivocal support for the members of this department and our contract. The Fire Chief must openly advocate for a fair agreement and stand alongside the people who serve this department every day.
We are meeting regularly with the Board of Supervisors, the CEO, and the Fire Chief in an effort to achieve alignment and reach an agreement everyone can support.
Binding arbitration will be on the ballot in November. As that election approaches, the County knows that binding arbitration may become an available option. It is not the path we prefer, but if the County forces the issue, it will become a powerful tool. It is now up to the CEO to bring all parties together and settle every public safety contract before that time comes.
We will continue keeping you informed as bargaining proceeds each week. Negotiations are intensifying and beginning to move at a feverish pace—and that momentum is a positive sign. |

State Budget Rainy Day Fund – ACA 20
ACA 20 is supported by Local 1014 and California Professional Firefighters (CPF). Local Democratic Budget Chair Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel is leading a bipartisan and Governor-supported effort to enhance the state’s “rainy day fund” from 10% to 20%, ensuring that money will be available in lean times to protect important and critical needs, including firefighting resources statewide.
This bill is responsible, and Local 1014 helped drive the effort with our partners in CPF. We are supporting this measure on the ballot and in ballot arguments. We partner with the people we serve on firefighting issues and fiscally responsible policies to protect our state funding and resources, and to protect our communities. |
