Friday Update 12-23-22
Updated On: Jan 17, 2023

Brothers and Sisters,

On behalf of the 3,400 members of Los Angeles County Firefighters, Local 1014, we wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Healthy Holiday Season!

As 2022 comes to a close, we look back on a year of growth and of healing. We are blessed to work for the greatest Fire Department in the nation. Despite overwhelming odds, all our Local 1014 members, including Firefighters, Paramedics, Dispatch, Heavy Equipment, Health Haz-Mat, Forestry, Camps, and Pilots, remain committed to the mission of providing world-class service to the over 4 million residents of the unincorporated communities of Los Angeles County and 60 contract cities we serve each day.

We know that you and your families are making sacrifices this holiday to ensure the safety of the communities we serve. We not only recognize this sacrifice we are forever thankful for your commitment.

This holiday we would like to send special thoughts and prayers to those serving in our military abroad and to those serving in our fire stations, dispatch centers, and in our communities this holiday. As always, we ask that you celebrate responsibly. DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE AND DONT TEXT AND DRIVE!

As always, stay safe and take care of each other. On behalf of the Executive Board, we wish you and your families a Safe and Healthy Holiday.

UPCOMING CONTRACT RATIFICATION VOTE

This week, the Local 1014 Executive Board has unanimously voted to support the ratification of our tentative agreement (TA) of our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Contract ratification ballots will arrive in the mail for us all to vote to ratify the terms for the next three years joining our fringe contract for security in salary and benefits.

This successor contract is rich in both salary and benefits for our members. It secures three years of COLA 5.5% 7/1/2022 with retroactivity, a signing bonus of $1375, years two and three at 3.25% each for all three years COLA,  additional comp time days, fringe seniority vacation day banking system - Fit for Life WFI changes to include behavioral health tools and good faith effort mandatory / non-punitive language, establishing a Retiree Medical Trust for our Plan C members providing the tool to provide retiree medical care funding for their spouses, domestic partners and children. We successfully fended off plans for random drug testing, alternative staffing models, erosion of grievance procedures and more, while protecting all Articles of our amazing MOU.

We also confirmed today that the signing bonus check for this contract, pending ratification, will be in the January 30th paycheck and the COLA increase with retroactivity will be in the January 13th paycheck.

We want to thank the Local 1014 Bargaining Team / Executive Board, and the hard work put in to write every item and work through all details of proposals and funding to get this done.

A Message from the Peer Support Team and Dr Steve

While this time of year can be a period of great joy and fun-filled with family and friends, it can also be a time of great pain and loneliness for many of our LACoFD members and their families. For those who have experienced a recent loss or may be going through a separation or divorce, the Holidays can be a very challenging time.

Our mission is always to be there for our brothers and sisters in the fire service – and especially during your greatest time of need. If you find yourself struggling, please reach out to one of our trained Peer Support Team Members. Please click the Peer Support Team Roster, which includes your colleagues in the LACoFD who will maintain your confidentiality and provide you with support during difficult times.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE. The Local 1014 / LACoFD Behavioral Health and Peer Support Programs are here for our members and families, and we are ready to assist with free services that are 100% confidential and supported by both specialized Mental Health Professionals and highly-trained Peer Support Team Members (many of whom have been through the same issues that you may be experiencing right now).

In Solidarity,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
