Friday Update
Brothers & Sisters,
We continue to use the images and the impact of the Boyd Incident involving our brothers and sisters of United Firefighters Los Angles City Local 112 (UFLAC) to remind our members to train, use our safety equipment and the Mayday policies and protocols when operating and a member or members are in trouble. The IAFF Fire Ground Survival (FGS) training gave rise to the national embrace of the Mayday and actions to save lives of Firefighters who may be lost, disoriented, injured, low on air, trapped, or involved in an explosion.
Glendale Firefighters IAFF Local 776 also recently had an incident in a three-story center hallway apartment building with an unknown basement. We would like to encourage all of our members to make this a drill with your crews and review this wonderfully composed AAR from the CARR Incident. Thank you to our brothers and sisters of Glendale Firefighters Association IAFF Local 776 for the lessons learned and the share.

Recruit Class 157
 
Recruit Class 157 begins June 8 and 56 more recruits will start their training to join the ranks of the LACOFD. Class 156 netted us 50 new firefighters who came to us from different agencies and from the veterans of our hiring list.
Keeping up with retirements and promotions remains a top priority of the Executive Board on behalf of the membership. We worked very hard to get things moving and we intend to keep them moving through the end of this year and then we would like to transition to an FCTC and CPAT hiring process with recruitment embedded and running two to three classes per year in perpetuity to keep staffing levels consistent. Stay tuned.

1014 Blood Drive
The Red Cross is experiencing a severe shortage of blood due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has not only limited donors but also available sites for blood drives. As part of our commitment to our communities, we are hosting a blood drive and partnering with Supervisor Hilda Solis to help get the word out that we need donors.
This drive will be open to the public but by appointment only. No walk-in accepted. We also require donors to fill out an online form in advance, wear a face covering or mask for your appointment, and adhere to our social distancing requirements.

Everyday Superhero Books!
Finally, as we head into the weekend, we have some feel-good news from our Executive Board and our fire family. Ashley Flowers - daughter of 1014 2nd Vice President Dave Morse and wife to FFS Bret Flowers created a book series to show appreciation for all the real-life superheroes of the world. Her books instill in children at a young age that they can do anything! Check out the Firefighter series book! Great work Ashley Flowers! Just another example of how our 1014 family pulls together to get the message of service and leadership out in the world during these difficult times.
