LA County Firefighters Mourn the Loss of One of Their Own
With deep regret, the brothers and sisters of Los Angeles County Fire Fighters, Local 1014 are saddened to announce the loss of one of their own. Captain Daniel E. Elkins was victim to a fatal vehicle accident en route to fire station 117 in Lancaster while assigned to the wildfires in the Lake Hughes area, located in the Angeles National Forest. Firefighters who responded to the accident were assigned to Captain Elkins’ battalion and station.
“This has been an extremely tough day for all of us,” said Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte. “Words cannot describe the loss our department is feeling right now. It seems unbearable. Dan was a selfless, sincere guy… he was truly one of a kind. Our hearts and prayers are with his family.”
Captain Elkins, 47, lived in the Quartz Hill area in Los Angeles County near his station, fire station 117. A 20-year veteran with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Captain Elkins was appointed to the Department in 1983, and served as a fire weather specialist for the Department’s incident management team. He was described by his colleagues as a “firefighters’ firefighter” and admired by those who knew him.
“He always treated others with the utmost respect… he was just a great guy. You couldn’t ask for anyone more genuine to work with,” said Gillotte.
Captain Elkins is survived by his wife Rene, and two adult children, Amanda, 20, and Jeremy, 23.
