CPF Fallen Firefighters Memorial
October 18, 2008

Capitol Park, Sacramento

Dallas Jones, along with 25 other fallen firefighters, had thier names placed on the wall of the California Firefighters Memorial to forever honor them for the sacrifices they gave for every Californian.

Dallas, past Local 1014 President and longtime Firefighter at Station 17 in Whittier, pased away May 2008 from a short term illness related back to an incident he responded on prior to his leaving LA County Fire and becoming the head of the Office of Emergency Services for the State of California.

"Dallas Jones was not only a great Fire Service Labor Leader, but he was also a Firefighter...a Local 1014 Fire Fighter; a Los Angeles County Firefighter...and a friend of mine. I want people to know he gave of himself to better our wages, hours, and working conditions, but he also gave himself...Dallas died of job related cancer and so did many of his brothers from engine company 17 and it is fitting we should honor him on the memorial and may we never forget the classiest, unassuming warrior any elected official or firefighter ever met."

Dave Gillotte, Local 1014 Union President , Truck Engineer 164 C, Friend of Dallas.

At the family breakfast, prior to the memorial tribute to the fallen firefighters, President Gillotte presented a check from the Fire Foundation for $10,000 to Mike Dubron and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network.  LA County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman also presented a $ 5,000 check on behalf of the IAFC Metro Chiefs, in honor of Dallas, to the FCSN.  Proof positive that Dallas affected both Labor and Management in a very positive way throughout the years.

At the breakfast the familes were honored and had time to reflect prior to the tribute. Along with Dallas' wife Lily and Daughter Anadallas were his sons Brian and Mike. Both LA County Firefighters (Brian FFS 27's and Mike FFPM 49's). Mike and Brian were able to march in the procession of firefighters prior to the tribute with other firefighters before joining their family to pay tribute to Dallas.

The Jones family was escorted by family friend and 1014 Director Andy Doyle. Andy had the honor of taking care of the family's needs during the entire event.

Our own Honor Guard was there to present to Dallas' family, on behalf of, the California Professional Firefighters, with a US Flag.

It was Dallas' goal for everyone to have an increased awareness of job related cancer and cancer prevention and he became very active in supporting Mike Dubron and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network.  The Dallas Jones Presumptive Cancer Bill will be going forward to the legislature this next session seeking to double the current 5 year post-retirement period for presumption.

Also returning this year to the ceremony and the tribute breakfast was Jim Howes wife and friends.  An emotional day for all, Jim was killed in the line of duty in a Battalion 13 fire where a mansard collapse took his life in front of his fellow firefighters.

Our respects to all who were honored, and our thoughts and prayers to all of their families.
