BEHAVIORAL ISSUES IN THE FIRE SERVICE

This past week has been a tragic reminder of the impact mental health issues can have on so many. It not only effects the individual, but can have devastating impact on so many innocent and unsuspecting people around us.

We would just like to remind everyone you are not alone. You are surrounded by a family of brothers and sisters who are willing to listen, support, and assist in finding help. We have an amazing and dedicated group of peer counselors and chaplains who understand what first responders go through on a daily basis, county provided licensed Mental Health professionals that can be accessed by Department members 24/7.

The only way to begin to address these problems is to talk about them with someone.

Local 1014 has teamed up with FIRESTRONG in an effort to provide resources and support. Firestrong is an organization that was established to help fire department personnel when they need to call for help.

Click the following link to access www.Firestrong.org. Once on the site look for the drop down box titled "select department" and select Local 1014.

You will see many options to help you. There are resources listed there as well as links and phone numbers for assistance. There are links for issues such as PTSD, addiction and pain relief, just to list a few. This is a resource that is continually building on its foundation to help us.

The stigma associated with suicide, and most behavioral health issues makes it one of those subjects not talked about in the fire service. The IAFF in conjunction with top researchers and mental health professionals is developing new resources and tools (such as IAFF Online Behavioral Wellness Manual) designed to help affiliates and members recognize and deal with this and other growing issues.

Please remember there are people at the kitchen table of the fire station or in the cubicle right next to you that are ready to help you, just start the conversation. If you need help outside of our department, Local 1014 has now given you the tools to get help OR to help someone in need.

As always, please take care of yourself and each other.

Fraternally,

Your Local 1014 Executive Board
