"Recruit 31" - "BROTHERHOOD" - "WE SHALL NEVER FORGET"

These are two phrases we have embraced for many years and with great purpose in our chosen profession. The term Brotherhood by the way applies to Sisters and Brothers who serve, and the phrase "We Shall Never Forget" goes far beyond 911. These tenants of our chosen profession apply to our Fire Department Family both global and of course Locally, evidenced once again by our membership rising to the occasion to help one of our own in need.

As with so many challenges of the past and in this last year in particular, we are once again called to serve one of our own...a new guy, not even a probie or boot yet...simply a Firefighter Trainee, better known as a Recruit; Class 138 - Recruit 31...Jesus Ontiveros.

As you well now by now Jesus Ontiveros - Recruit 31 was suddenly stricken with Cancer, the details of which you also know, but simply life threatening late stage cancer. He is undergoing treatment and extreme challenges in life, unscheduled, and at a time when he should have been celebrating success and entry to our great LA County Fire Service.

He and his soon to be wife (with Junior in the Oven) had their world turned upside down in a flash. Brotherhood and Sisterhood and We Shall Never Forget started to shine immediately with donations of sick and vacation leave and monetary donations as well as service to his family at home and beyond by members and of course Recruit Class 138.

There are a few things that are key to helping Recruit 31 battle this demon and try to put things together for his family and those are "Faith and Family", "Income" and "Health Insurance". You can help by continuing to donate money, time and Pray and send cards and letters and if you visit, please check ahead and go in the afternoons because the mornings are very hard on Jesus with treatments and procedures and so forth...rest is the key in the am...

Do not underestimate the power of your written word and your thoughts and prayers in the form of cards and letters for Recruit 31 to read or be read to during treatment and long hard days... these are uplifting, supportive and helpful to not only Jesus, but his family as well. This just in as I write...Congratulations Jesus - Newly Married! What a week right? Wow!

In closing let me update you on a few things going on to get it done...days donated to be returned if not used or needed or a way to convert those days to payout for Jesus and related monetary donations still needed. Also, Local 1014 / Local 1014 Health Insurance, The Department and Big County are working on a way to get continuing Health Insurance Coverage for Recruit 31 and we are optimistic we have solved that issue, but not without some very hard work and collaboration between Local 1014, Big County, and The Department.

In closing, and as a reminder to us all...don't forget and practice as much as you can "Brotherhood" (Sistas Too!) and "We Shall Never Forget"...As many did Saturday October 19th at the Heartwalk at the Rose Bowl where LA County Fire Fighters and Family gathered at the Rose Bowl to remember our Health, and also Recruit Class 138 - with Recruit 31 Missing Man...ran and walked to remember, to raise funds, and to help others, to help Jesus.

We will update the membership on plenty of Union issues at the start of the upcoming week, but we thought it would be nice to keep the weekend in the spirit of what we all do best...fight the good fights for our family....

On behalf of the entire Local 1014 Executive Board we thank you in advance for your efforts.

Fraternally,

Dave Gillotte

President IAFF Local 1014
