WE SHALL NOT FORGET

WE SHALL NEVER FORGET!

Today is the 9 year anniversary of the horror of America under attack on her own soil.  That attack left our profession forever scarred in a way that we truly cannot ever forget.  We exclaimed "We Shall Never Forget" with reverence and respect to our brothers and sisters who died on 9.11, nine years ago today.

Today is more than remembrance of only 9.11 victims, but rather a day to remember and reflect on all firefighter line of duty deaths that have affected our profession.  Today in Colorado Springs at the IAFF National Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial hundreds of firefighters and family members gather to place 136 more firefighter's names on the memorial wall.  52 of these firefighters gave their lives last calendar year and 84 firefighters who will be recognized from previous years.

Los Angeles County Fire Fighters, IAFF Local # 1014 will honor and place 7 of our own on the memorial wall this beautiful morning.  Together with the family of our fallen, we will take time to proudly remember the service of these brave men and women.

Captain Ted Hall, August 30, 2009

A man of humility and strength, a family man and a great Captain and mentor to many, a man with a generous spirit who loved fun and the outdoors and loved his wife Kathy and his sons Randall and Steven served for over 27 years and gave his life on the Station Fire will be remembered.

Engineer Arnaldo "Arnie" "Q" Quinones, August 30, 2009

A remarkable man devoted to his family and father who would never see his daughter, a man who grew from a boy to a true leader as a camp foreman.  Arnie had a contagious smile and passion for our job and lived by the motto "First In, Last Out" will be remembered. He leaves behind his wife Loressa and his baby girl Sophia

William "Dallas" Jones, May 10, 2008

Known to all by "Dallas" and whose friends were always know as "Rascal" to him, Dallas began his service with the Whittier Fire Department, came to LA County and never looked back. Served at Station 17 and worked as a Firefighter as well as Union President and Executive Board member for 16 years, served at the CPF as a VP and Secretary Treasurer, OES Director and who died of occupational cancer 7 years into retirement.  The Dallas Jones Cancer Presumption Bill sits on the Governor's desk as we speak and if signed will extend our presumption from 5 years into retirement to 10 years into retirement.  Dallas will be remembered. Dallas leaves behind his wife Lilly, Daughter Annadallas, sons Mike and Bryan.

Philip Arreguin Jr., July 1, 2009

Philip was a little boy that never grew up, rising through the ranks from firefighter, paramedic, fire prevention, and fire captain.  Phil was an artist and a great cook and brought passion to the job every day he served.  Phil will be remembered. Phil leaves behind his wife Amelia and son Travis and daughter Brooklyn.

Edward J Savko, March 7, 1995

Ed loved his family very much and is survived by his wife Susie and two sons Ryan and Cory.  Ed was very dedicated to the department and to his family.  Around the station Ed was well respected and enjoyed every shift working with his brothers and sisters in the firehouses.  Ed served as a Paramedic, Firefighter, and Engineer ending up at 107's.  Ed will be remembered.

Carrie Henger-Neff, March 5, 2010

Carrie began her career with the LA County Fire Department in 1991 and worked her way to the rank of Fire Captain.  She was also a handler of canines and handled Spanner, the first USAR Canine to serve with our department.  She responded to Katrina/Rita and specialized in many USAR related skills.  She leaves behind her retired firefighter husband Robert and two grown children.

William Richard Carr, Jr., September 1, 2009

Engineer "Richard" Carr served for more than a decade with our department after hiring on in 1996 at the age of 36.  He was a hands on guy, a former auto mechanic with most of his career at 57B.  A dedicated firefighter who was taken from us too early and leaves behind two daughters Krista and Klarissa and his mother Louami.  Richard will be remembered.

Over 192 Bag and Pipers along with Honor Guard Members from throughout the Country to make up over 700 including our own Honor Guard and Pipe and Drummers will join the family and firefighters in Memorial Park in Colorado Springs to pay tribute.  I encourage members to log on to our website and link to the IAFF website to see additional information and photo's of the National Fire Fighter Memorial.  We will bring back photos and coverage of the event.

Special thanks to the entire Union Executive Board for making this event come together for the families of our fallen, thanks to the Fire Chief for his support and to the Honor Guard Members and Pipes and Drummers and Chaplains who help make this event so special.

In closing, we remind every firefighter from Local 1014, the Los Angeles County Fire Fighters, to take time to "Remember" all firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty, and go beyond that to remember all of our brothers and sisters who have passed including those who did not die in the line of duty, but died suddenly and unexpectedly and were taken from their families, like John Talley and Dean Stewart.

We have services for Dean Stewart on Monday (Flag Ceremony) and Tuesday (Funeral) and I hope we see a large gathering of Uniformed Personnel come to pay their respects to the Stewart Family.  It is what we do; it is the family we are part of.  We have attached the Funeral and Flag Services information.  We have cancelled the General Membership Meeting so that all can attend Dean's Services.  Hope to see you all there.

"WE SHALL NEVER FORGET" .....rather "WE SHALL REMEMBER"....today the anniversary of 9.11.

Fraternally,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board

John Smolin, Dave Lopez, John Bishop, Dave Morse, Paul Rusin, Will Pryor, Lew Currier, Andy Doyle, and Pat Dolan
