Happy 4th of July to all!    Be Safe!   Give Thanks!

This weekend will be one of celebration and a time to be thankful for all that we have and all that it means to be an American...

It is a time to remember what a privilege it is to also be a Los Angeles County Fire Fighter.  We are blessed to be part of one of the best families in fire service.  We have one of the best departments and Unions in the world, and it is reflected each and every day in the work and the wonderful things our members do to serve our citizens in Los Angeles County and beyond.

As some take time to spend this holiday with family and friends, let us also take time to remember all of the brothers and sisters who will be on the front lines in the stations and out in the brush protecting the County and the State.  Let us also take a moment to remember all of the servicemen and women who proudly serve our Country both here and abroad to protect our way of life.  We are fortunate to have the opportunities we have and the job we have.

Take a moment to give thanks for all of the things that we sometimes take for granted.  Think of the things you can do for your crew, your station, our Union, our profession.  Let us all come back after the 4th of July Holiday weekend with a renewed spirit of what it means to be a Los Angeles County Fire Fighter.  Let us all step up to work together to accomplish great things.

We have much to do when we hit the bricks next week...Finish electing a new County Board of Supervisor (Mark Ridley-Thomas), Contract City Issues, State Elections and Initiatives, a Presidential Election ,and all of the business of the IAFF Convention.  We have contract negotiations beginning, and many internal issues we continue to address with the department, starting with the staffing of the strike teams and resources that will undoubtedly be called upon again and again this fire season.

Both myself and the entire Executive Board of your Union...Local 1014! are extremely proud of the memberships’ work both in the field as paid professional Firefighters and Fire Service Professionals in Dispatch, Forestry, Health Haz-Mat, Heavy Equipment, and Fire Prevention Engineering, and also as the Brothers and Sisters who stand on the front lines of the Union work to protect and build our profession economically and in every other way.

Enjoy your families and friends either at work or at home or wherever you may be this holiday weekend and we will get back on it again after the weekend.

Last, we must remind all of us that while we take time to celebrate this holiday weekend...Be Responsible!  If you are going to drink alcohol...don't drive at all...not cars, trucks, boats...not at all!  Get a driver, get a cab, get a room!

Many of our members have lost so much over the years by making bad decisions involving drinking and driving.  They have lost not only jobs, money, marriages...but sadly lives have been lost as well.  Remember....  .08 means no Class B for a year, which means NO JOB for a year.  2nd offense?  You don't want to go there.

Be safe and get it done like you always do!  Give thanks for all that is great for our membership, and tell the new guys and girls how we got here and how we are going to stay here!

Happy 4th Again...

Fraternally,

President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive Board
