2008 Voter Guide - 1014 Recommendations
Updated On: Oct 294, 2008
Tuesday November 4th is Election Day. First and foremost your Union is encouraging you to exercise your right and vote. This is something many people have, and continue to, fight for. Hopefully you have requested an absentee ballot or you have become a permanent absentee voter.

You have elected us to represent you when it comes to wages hours and working conditions. We are asked continuously why we support the people we support.

You elected us to research, meet, interview and support, on your behalf, those that support our firefighter issues. When we are looking at a potential candidate we look at their past voting record (if they have one) and see how they stand on our issues ONLY. You did not elect us to look at issues outside of firefighters issues.

We also analyze ballot measures throughout the county that have impact on our service levels in various cities where we provide Fire and EMS services. We are actively involved in ballot initiative review and review and interpretation of polling data. This process is an ongoing one so that we can identify the best people and get them in the right spots.

As an example recently we interviewed a candidate who was running for State Assembly. He was a sitting city council member so we met with and discussed with the firefighters from his city where he stood with them and their local issues. We then met with him to ask him direct questions about his cities fire department. Then we met as a group with other firefighter locals for an endorsement interview. We asked him questions about his support for such things as the Firefighter Bill of Rights, his position on No on 75 and what actions he took to support/not support us. We also asked how he felt about our pension system and health benefits.

He was solid on our issues and continues to be as a current sitting Assembly member due to our support.

If we were to ask about issues that are of concern to us personally, outside of our firefighter issues then we are not representing you appropriately. Things we may feel are important to us personally may not be the same for you.

Remember we are recommending to you those people that support firefighters issues. Where they stand on your own personal issues you need to research on your own. Most importantly please remember to vote November 4, 2008.

The following information is provided to you as a “guide” on the upcoming election

PRESIDENT/VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

LA County Firefighters, Local 1014 (1014) and the California Professional Firefighters (CPF) have not taken a position on this race but the International Association of Firefighters is supporting and endorsing Barack Obama/Joe Biden.

CALIFORNIA PROPOSITIONS

Both 1014 and CPF recommend a no vote on Propositions 6 and 9. Both are bad for the fire service. Go here http://www.cpf.org/go/cpf/political-action/2008-election/public-safety-propositions-deal-out-fire-service-again/ for more information.
